A Journey from Language Barriers to Academic Leadership Built on Hard Work, Faith, and Determination
How one immigrant's determination to overcome language barriers transformed into a mission to empower students and lead educational change.
From Immigrant Student to Educational Leader: A Journey Built on Purpose
My journey into education did not begin in a formal classroom. It began in a small home in Poland, where I grew up as the oldest of five siblings.
Long before I ever considered teaching as a profession, I discovered my passion for it naturally—by helping my younger siblings learn. I would create a classroom at home, step into the role of teacher, and guide them through lessons. Even then, I found deep joy in watching someone grow more confident through education.
At 18, my life changed dramatically when my family immigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunity.
I arrived without speaking English.
Everything felt unfamiliar. The language, culture, and systems around me were new and often overwhelming. Like many immigrants, I began from the ground up, working in a factory while trying to adapt to an entirely different world.
But I carried one thing with me that would shape everything that followed:
Determination.
Early on, I made a decision that my circumstances would not define my future.
I began learning English and eventually enrolled at Luzerne County Community College—the very institution where I now serve as department chair. I started cautiously, taking just one course because I lacked confidence in my language abilities. Semester by semester, I built momentum, gradually increasing my course load while continuing to work.
That season of my life taught me one of the most valuable lessons I have ever learned:
Growth happens step by step.
After earning my associate degree, I transferred to Bloomsburg University, where I completed my teaching degree. My dream had always been to become an educator, and I was determined to make that dream a reality.
Although I originally imagined myself teaching in a high school setting, life had a different plan.
My path led me back to Luzerne County Community College—this time as a part-time ESL instructor.
That opportunity became the foundation of my life’s work.
As I began teaching, I quickly recognized a growing need within our region. Northeastern Pennsylvania was becoming increasingly diverse, with more immigrant and non-native English-speaking students seeking access to higher education. I saw students who were capable, motivated, and resilient—but who needed stronger academic language support to fully succeed.
I knew our institution could do more.
Driven by both professional insight and personal experience, I developed and proposed an Academic ESL program designed to bridge that gap. After years of strategic planning and collaboration, the program officially launched in 2018.
Since then, it has helped countless students strengthen their English proficiency, pursue academic advancement, and expand career opportunities.
Watching students gain confidence, find their voice, and achieve their goals remains one of the most meaningful aspects of my work.
That same year, I was appointed Chair of ESL.
In 2025, when the English and ESL departments merged, I became Chair of both departments.
Today, my responsibilities include overseeing faculty, mentoring instructors, managing curriculum and scheduling, and continuing to teach students directly. Yet despite the leadership responsibilities, my mission remains unchanged:
To help students believe in themselves and realize their full potential.
When I reflect on my journey, I often think about the young woman who arrived in this country unable to speak the language and uncertain of what her future would hold.
I remember the challenges.
The long hours.
The moments of doubt.
But I also remember the opportunities, the mentors, and the inner strength that allowed me to keep moving forward.
My story has reinforced a truth I now share with others:
Success is not determined by where you begin.
It is defined by your willingness to persist, to learn, and to grow.
To anyone facing uncertainty—especially students, immigrants, and young women beginning their own journeys—I offer this:
Believe in your capacity to grow.
Be patient with yourself.
Value small progress.
Do not measure your path against someone else’s timeline.
And when opportunity presents itself, take the risk.
Because extraordinary things become possible when dreams are paired with perseverance, purpose, and hard work.
And above all else:
Character remains the foundation of every lasting success story.
