Part 5 ~Conclusion Honoring the Divine Masculine~ The Doctor and the Medicine Man

Years passed and Reggie heard that his good friend Alan had moved away from the

town near the reserve and worked as a doctor in the United States. He wondered if Alan

wished he had been a medicine man, the Indian way. He was glad, though,

that Alan could help people with the other kind of medicine.

One evening, Reggie s phone rang and it was Alan s wife. She had sad news about

his good friend. “Alan isn’t with us anymore, Reggie”, she tearfully explained.

She told Reggie that Alan had gotten sick again but this time he didn’t want to

dance at the Sun Dance because he felt that it was time for him to go with his spirit

family. Reggie hung up the phone and sat in his easy chair thinking about all the

times he and his life long pal had enjoyed adventures and talks about everything,

including the spirit world. Reggie had tears in his eyes when he fell asleep thinking

about Alan.

While Reggie slept he dreamt that he was on his pony racing across the prairies

with Alan, laughing and shouting as they always did when they were kids. But this

dream was different, it was more real, everything seemed much more beautiful and

brighter. Alan suddenly pulled his horse to a halt and waited for Reggie to stop

racing and return to his side.

The two friends looked a long time at each other until Alan spoke, “My dear

friend, Ba-Ti-Ga-Sa-Pi, I am with the spirit people now”. He continued to explain

that when he was in the hospital in the earth realm, he’d gone to sleep and

awakened in his spirit body. It was just like his earth body used to be when he was

a young man. He had looked for the golden gates where spirit people sang in choirs

on clouds but instead he found his pony by a stream waiting for him. He happily

jumped on his horse and ran more swiftly than he had ever ridden before until he

came to a place where there were great herds of buffalo, clear rivers, fresh air, blue

skies and an Indian camp with many tipis.

Alan smiled at his friend’s joyful expression at this news and went on to say that

the spirit people came out of their lodges and greeted him lovingly. They took him

to the chief’s lodge and there they had prepared a feast for his welcome

celebration. He had smoked the sacred pipe with the medicine men and they

honored him for the good medicine he had practiced when he was in the earth realm.

“Ba-Ti-Ga-Sa-Pi, my dear friend and brother, the spirit realm is not that

different from the earth realm”, he said with light in his eyes. “Only here you can

travel as you wish, do great miracles; help others in the spirit realm or as a spirit

guide to those in the earth realm”, he said with joy and enthusiasm.

BaTiGaSaPi raised his staff in a sign of great honor and reverence to Allen, the

medicine man. “I will always be with you, my brother, and will guide your steps

so that you can continue to heal others in your earth realm with your good

medicine and words," Alan said returning the honor sign to his friend. They both

turned their ponies and rode away in opposite directions, both full of spirit and

joyful in their paths as medicine men in the two realms.

Reggie awoke in his easy chair with a start. It took him a few minutes to focus his

awareness back into the earth realm. Then he smiled as he remembered the words

of his brother-friend, “I will always be with you, my brother."
