A Journey of Resilience
Finding Strength in Life's Unexpected Moments
A Journey of Resilience
At 27, my life took an unexpected turn. I was aboard a vessel, floating on the water, the sun filtering through the clouds, when I slipped down a stairwell after leaving the gym. As I tumbled, I lost my breath, darkness creeping in. The fall was jarring, and it led me to the medical facility on board, where I would discover I was pregnant.
Pregnancy was never part of my plan, especially not at a moment when I had just started to reclaim my health. Having struggled with my weight since my early teens, I had finally learned how to manage my diet after years of grappling with the fear of diabetes. My journey began when I was 18 and, with my mother’s support, I joined a program that taught me the importance of balanced eating. I transformed my relationship with food, losing weight and gaining confidence along the way.
Fast forward to my military life. I joined at 24, seeking purpose and service. Yet even as I thrived in my career, my body underwent changes that left me feeling uneasy. I experienced weight gain during boot camp, but I persisted, determined to reclaim my health. When I began feeling lightheaded, I believed I had diabetes, only to find out I was pregnant—a revelation that turned my world upside down.
I was excited yet terrified. My pregnancy became high-risk, and just as I was balancing my career and schooling, my body began to feel unpredictable. At 20 weeks, I felt a gush of fluid and, thinking it was normal, continued with my day until the reality of the situation set in. I had to confront my fears and seek help.
With the support of my partner, I went to the hospital, guided by worry and instincts honed from past experiences. It was a moment of vulnerability, but also one of strength. I learned that resilience is forged in the fires of uncertainty, and I was ready to face whatever lay ahead.
Through these experiences, I found my voice and purpose. I realized that my journey—marked by challenges—could empower others. As a mother, I carry the lessons of resilience, reminding my children and those I encounter that strength often arises from the most unexpected places.
