A Unicorn Promise: How a Door Became a Story
How Loss Became the Gateway to Creative Transformation and Healing
Finding My Voice Through a Unicorn Promise
By P.K. Rowan
There are moments in life that change us forever.
Sometimes those moments arrive through joy. Sometimes they arrive through loss.
After losing my mother, something unexpected happened. Stories began to flow. Songs began to pour out. Characters appeared. Entire worlds unfolded in my imagination. What started as a way to process grief became a creative journey that transformed my life.
One of those creations became A Unicorn Promise.
At its heart, A Unicorn Promise is a story about survival, resilience, healing, and the promises that sustain us through life's darkest moments. The novel follows Penelope Dinkler, a young woman whose life is shattered by violence and captivity. Through courage, faith, friendship, and unexpected love, she discovers that even the deepest wounds can heal.
But the story began long before the first chapter was written.
The inspiration started with a door.
Not just any door, but a symbolic sea-green stained-glass door filled with unicorns, peace roses, sweet peas, hummingbirds, and a hidden promise. I designed the door myself, and each symbol carried personal meaning. As I explored what those symbols represented, an entire story began to grow around them.
The Unicorn Promise itself became the emotional foundation of the novel: a promise of loyalty, love, protection, and hope that cannot be broken by fear, distance, or circumstance.
What surprises me most is that I never set out to become a novelist.
Before A Unicorn Promise, I was already creating in other ways. I have written nearly 200 songs, built websites, developed projects for children, created book covers, and launched creative ventures that continue to grow. What I discovered is that creativity doesn't always arrive when we expect it to. Sometimes it appears later in life. Sometimes it appears after heartbreak. Sometimes it appears when we finally allow ourselves to listen.
Many women spend years caring for others, building families, managing responsibilities, and putting their own dreams on hold.
If there is one thing I have learned, it is this:
It is never too late to create.
It is never too late to write the book.
It is never too late to sing the song.
It is never too late to follow the idea that keeps returning to your heart.
A Unicorn Promise represents far more than a novel to me. It represents perseverance. It represents finding purpose after loss. It represents discovering that creativity can be both healing and transformative.
Most of all, it represents the belief that even in our darkest seasons, hope remains.
Sometimes that hope begins with something as simple as a promise.
A Unicorn Promise.
