Are You Building a Business… or Treating It Like a Hobby?
From Hobby to Business: The Uncomfortable Truth About Entrepreneurial Growth
There was a moment on a recent call that really stayed with me.
It wasn’t just what the host shared…
it was what people opened up about.
You could hear it in their voices—the desire for more.
More freedom. More income. More control over their time.
And yet… there was something else underneath it:
Hesitation.
Inconsistency.
Avoidance.
Not because they didn’t care,
but because something deeper was at play.
And it sparked a question I think every entrepreneur needs to ask:
Am I truly building a business… or am I treating it like a hobby?
🔹 The Freedom We Say We Want
So many people step into entrepreneurship for one reason:
Freedom.
Freedom from the 9–5.
Freedom to choose how we spend our time.
Freedom to create something meaningful and profitable.
But here’s what often happens…
We carry over the mindset of being an employee.
We wait for direction.
We wait until we “feel ready.”
We wait for clarity before we act.
And without realizing it…
we begin treating our business like something optional.
Something we’ll get to.
🔹 The Truth Most People Avoid
A business doesn’t grow from occasional effort.
It grows from:
- Focus
- Structure
- Consistent daily action
What I’ve seen—both in others and in my own journey—is this:
We tend to avoid the very things that will move us forward.
The outreach.
The conversations.
The visibility.
The decisions that stretch us.
Not because we’re incapable…
but because those actions sit just outside our comfort zone.
So instead…
We stay busy with what feels safe.
A little here… a little there…
And we call it “working on our business.”
🔹 The Shift That Changes Everything
There was a point in my journey where I realized…
I could no longer do this alone—
not if I truly wanted to grow.
So I made a decision:
I would surround myself with people who were already achieving what I desired.
People who thought bigger.
Moved faster.
Expected more.
And then I leaned into something that, at first, felt uncomfortable:
Accountability.
Having someone ask:
“Did you do what you said you were going to do?”
It sounds simple.
But it changes everything.
Because now… it’s not optional.
🔹 If It Feels Uncomfortable… You’re on the Right Path
One of the most powerful realizations I’ve had is this:
If something feels uncomfortable…
that doesn’t mean you should avoid it.
It usually means you’re standing at the edge of growth.
Think back to when you first started your business.
Everything felt new.
Uncertain.
Even uncomfortable.
And yet… you moved forward anyway.
That’s the energy that creates results.
Not perfection.
Not certainty.
Movement.
🔹 From Goals to Daily Process
After revisiting Atomic Habits, I was reminded of something simple—but powerful:
Success isn’t just about the goal.
It’s about the process you commit to daily.
What are you doing—every single day—
that moves you closer to your vision?
Not when it’s convenient.
Not when you feel motivated.
But as a standard.
Declare it.
Write it down.
Give it a timeline.
And most importantly…
Keep your word to yourself.
And if you miss?
You don’t quit.
You reflect.
You adjust.
You continue.
Because progress isn’t about perfection.
It’s about staying in motion.
🔹 The Real Question
So here’s the question I invite you to sit with:
Are you operating like a business owner… or a hobbyist?
No judgment.
Just awareness.
Because awareness is the starting point of every meaningful shift.
