Aviation History #3: Singapore Airlines

Welcome to the third featured airline in the aviation history series! After covering the officially sanctioned Aeroflot and United Airlines, we now turn to another Star Alliance partner airline—and one of the best airlines in the world by nearly every metric—Singapore Airlines.

The flag carrier of the nation-state of Singapore, Singapore Airlines (ICAO code: SIA/SQ, depending on the route) is based at the award-winning Changi International Airport, practically a city unto itself. Jewel Changi Airport—often simply called “Jewel”—includes gardens, attractions, a hotel, and about 300 retail and dining outlets, as well as early baggage check-in facilities. It covers a total floor area of 135,700 square meters (1,461,000 sq. ft.), spanning ten stories—five above ground and five below. It is widely regarded as a world-class attraction. But while this is a defining feature of Singapore Airlines’ hub, let’s turn to the airline itself.

Singapore Airlines is regularly ranked by Skytrax (and others) as a five-star luxury airline, but this was not always the case. Over time, Singapore leveraged this luxury identity to define itself.

To date, Singapore Airlines (corporately, the Singapore Airlines Group, abbreviated as SAG) has more than 20 subsidiaries, including numerous airline-related businesses. Notable subsidiaries include SIA Engineering Company—one of the largest in the world, second only to Lufthansa Technik—which handles maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations across nine countries, with a portfolio of 27 joint ventures, including partnerships with Boeing and Rolls-Royce. Singapore Airlines Cargo (SIA Cargo) operates the airline’s freighter fleet and manages cargo capacity in passenger aircraft. Scoot, a wholly owned subsidiary, operates as a low-cost carrier (LCC), serving price-sensitive markets across Asia.

The airline is also notable for its iconic “Singapore Girl” branding. This long-standing marketing concept features flight attendants dressed in the distinctive sarong kebaya uniform, introduced in 1972. The image remains central to the airline’s identity today.

Singapore Airlines’ cabin service—closely associated with the Singapore Girl—has received numerous awards from travel and tourism organizations, including “World’s Best Cabin Crew Service” by the Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Awards for 23 consecutive years, beginning in 2003. The branding concept was developed by the advertising agency Batey Ads, which positioned the sarong kebaya-clad flight attendant as the airline’s defining symbol.

Singapore Airlines is also well known for maintaining a remarkably consistent livery throughout its history. In fact, it is one of the few airlines in the world that has never made a major change to its visual identity.

Today, Singapore Airlines is one of the largest airline groups in Asia, operating nonstop and direct flights across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Its slogan, “A Great Way to Fly,” continues to reflect its global reputation.

Origins and Early Development

Singapore Airlines traces its origins to Malayan Airways, a joint venture between Singapore (then a British colony) and Malaysia. Established in 1937 through a collaboration between the Straits Steamship Company of Singapore and British firms Ocean Steamship Company and Imperial Airways, the airline aimed to serve regional routes. Malayan Airways Limited was formally incorporated on October 21, 1937.

However, operations were delayed due to competition from Wearne’s Air Service, limited market demand, and the onset of World War II. The airline postponed its launch until conditions improved.

Following the war and the collapse of Wearne’s Air Service, opportunities emerged for regional aviation growth. Malayan Airways expanded in the 1940s and 1950s with support from British Commonwealth carriers such as BOAC (now British Airways) and Qantas Empire Airways. Membership in IATA further supported its expansion.

In 1963, with the formation of Malaysia, the airline was renamed Malaysian Airways. It later became Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) in 1966 after Singapore’s separation. MSA rapidly expanded its fleet and routes, introducing Boeing 707 and 737 aircraft.

Formation of Singapore Airlines

In 1972, MSA ceased operations and split into two carriers: Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airline System. Singapore retained the international routes, Boeing fleet, and headquarters. J.Y. Pillay became its first chairman. The airline officially adopted its name, branding, and livery on July 1, 1972.

Expansion was rapid. By 1976, the airline operated 21 aircraft and served 28 cities across 23 countries. The introduction of Boeing 747 aircraft significantly expanded long-haul capabilities.

Growth, Innovation, and Global Reach

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Singapore Airlines expanded into the United States, Europe, and beyond. Notably, it briefly partnered with British Airways to operate Concorde flights between London and Singapore, though the service was discontinued due to regulatory and economic challenges.

The opening of Changi Airport in 1981 marked a major milestone, establishing a world-class hub. Fleet modernization continued with Boeing 747-300 and later Airbus aircraft, including the A310 and A340.

In the 2000s, Singapore Airlines pioneered ultra-long-haul travel, launching nonstop flights to Los Angeles and Newark using Airbus A340-500 aircraft. In 2007, it became the first airline to operate the Airbus A380 in commercial service.

The airline later introduced the Airbus A350-900ULR, further extending long-haul capabilities. It also integrated SilkAir into its operations, reintroducing narrow-body aircraft such as the Boeing 737 into its fleet.

Modern Operations and Recognition

Today, Singapore Airlines is a cornerstone member of Star Alliance and a global leader in premium air travel. It ranks among the top carriers worldwide in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs).

As of 2025, the airline operates a fleet of over 160 aircraft, including both passenger and cargo planes. It is one of the largest operators of the Airbus A380.

In 2026, Fortune ranked Singapore Airlines among the world’s most admired companies, placing it 24th overall and first in the airline category.

Cabin Experience and Service Excellence

Singapore Airlines offers five classes of service: Suites, First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. Its Suites product is widely regarded as one of the most luxurious in commercial aviation.

The airline continuously invests in cabin innovation, introducing new seating, enhanced privacy, and advanced in-flight entertainment systems. Its Business Class features fully flat beds, direct aisle access, and high-end materials.

Economy Class has also evolved, with improved ergonomics, personal entertainment systems, and modern design features.

Singapore Airlines is also known for its culinary offerings. Regional specialties such as Hainanese chicken rice and satay are featured on select routes. Premium passengers can use the “Book the Cook” service to pre-select meals from an expanded menu.

Recognition and Awards

Singapore Airlines continues to receive global recognition. In 2024, it was named the World’s Best Airline and received awards for Best Cabin Staff and Best First Class.

In 2025, it was again ranked among the world’s most admired companies, reinforcing its leadership in the aviation industry.
