Beyond the Label
From Prison to Purpose: How Refusing to Quit Transformed My Life and Can Transform Yours
We live in a culture that loves a clean narrative—a straight line from point A to point B, neatly packaged with minimal friction. But real life doesn't work that way. For many of us, especially women carving out spaces in male-dominated industries, entrepreneurship, or leadership, the path is littered with unexpected roadblocks, heavy labels, and moments when the easiest, most logical choice seems to be giving up.
I know what it's like to stand at that crossroads. My story didn't start in a pristine boardroom or a privileged classroom; it started behind the heavy steel doors of the Texas Youth Commission maximum-security facility and later behind adult prison walls. Society had handed me a permanent, unchangeable label: Felon. In the eyes of the world, my story was effectively over before it had even begun.
When you are told by professors, institutions, and systemic barriers that you don't belong, the temptation to fold is immense. But adversity isn't a permanent stop sign—it's a filter. It tests whether you are willing to let other people dictate your ceiling or whether you will stubbornly, relentlessly build your own foundation out of the rubble.
The Power of the Pivot and the Refusal to Quit
After being released from prison, I didn't wait for permission to rebuild. I enrolled in college while raising a young son who battled serious respiratory issues, leading me straight into a medical program. When my background check cleared, a professor pulled me aside and advised me to drop out, warning that my record meant I'd never get licensed.
In that moment, you have a choice: You can absorb their fear and quit, or you can look the obstacle dead in the eye and ask the only question that matters: "Are you kicking me out?" When the answer is no, you get back to class.
That refusal to accept "no" as a final answer didn't just earn me a Respiratory Care Practitioner license and pave the way for an MBA—it eventually carried me into a 10-year career with the U.S. Air Force, where I earned a Top Secret security clearance. When federal investigators looked at my thick file, they didn't just see my past mistakes; they saw the undeniable evidence of who I had become. They saw a woman who refused to stay down.
From Survival to UNSHACKLED Level 7
Today, my life looks entirely different. Through my writing, the Deliverance Case Files series, and my platform at Holy No, I speak directly to women who are fighting their way out of the shadows. Whether you are recovering from trauma, battling systemic labels, or trying to rebuild your life after hitting absolute rock bottom, I want you to know one fundamental truth: Your rock bottom is not your destination; it's your foundation.
True resilience isn't just about white-knuckling your way through hard times—it's about radical ownership. It means taking responsibility for your future, guarding your integrity as your absolute highest currency, and understanding that external systems and human opinions do not define your internal peace.
A Call to Every Woman Facing the Odds
If you are currently standing in the middle of a storm, feeling like the entire world has stacked the deck against you, hear this: Do not quit.
The enemy of your progress wants nothing more than for you to silence your story, blend into the background, and accept the limits others have placed on you. But you didn't survive the fire just to stay quiet. Every small, seemingly insignificant step you take in the right direction creates momentum.
Keep moving forward. Keep showing up. Guard your vision, protect your peace, and refuse to let anyone dim your light. Because when you decide that giving up is simply not an option, you stop just surviving your past—you start mastering your present, and you unlock the unstoppable power of a woman who cannot be counted out.
