Her Story

About D.

D. Ann is an author, entrepreneur, and former civil servant whose life is a masterclass in resilience and self-determination. Having overcome a turbulent past as a convicted felon and ex-drug addict, her journey began in the maximum-security Texas Youth Commission (TYC) facility, where she earned the majority of her high school credits before securing her GED while pregnant. Refusing to let her circumstances define her, she went on to earn her Respiratory Care Practitioner credentials and ultimately earned her MBA.

D. Ann’s drive to break barriers led her to a 10-year career with the U.S. Air Force, where she earned multiple quarterly awards and secured a Top Secret clearance—a monumental achievement given her background. After successfully operating an aesthetic mobile concierge med spa business for two years, she transitioned to authoring full-time. Today, she independently writes, edits, markets, and publishes her Deliverance Case Files series, currently working on her sixth book.

Featured in CEO Times, Women’s Insider, and Weekly Insider, D. Ann leads with radical integrity. Beyond her writing, she actively feeds the unhoused community and is organizing a nonprofit to redirect surplus restaurant food to homeless shelters, proving that no matter where you start, you have the power to rewrite your story.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with D.

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes down to a rough upbringing paired with an unshakeable refusal to let circumstances or people dim my light. Resilience isn't just about surviving hard times—it's about staying dedicated, keeping your inner drive alive, and taking complete ownership of where you're going.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

When I was very young, my father gave me advice that shaped my entire path: ‘No matter what you do, never stop going to school. There are endless grants, loans, and scholarships out there to fund your education—especially for minorities. Never stop learning.’ That belief in continuous education gave me the mindset to rise above my circumstances and keep growing at every stage of my life inside and outside the classroom.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never take 'no' for an answer, and never let past mistakes—whether self-inflicted or caused by someone else—define your future. Keep moving forward, even when it feels like you aren't making progress. Every small step in the right direction creates momentum, and if you refuse to stop, those tiny steps will eventually carry you to where you belong.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is navigating the permanent label of a convicted felon—a reality that continues to impact me 23 years later. I have been denied Global Entry twice because of my record, and I still cannot vote or own a gun. Yet, despite those limitations, I hold an active Top Secret clearance. My greatest opportunity lies in returning to work with the U.S. Air Force to maintain that clearance, proving that integrity, proven capability, and dedication outweigh the ongoing stigmas of the past.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is my absolute number one value—it is the foundation for everything I do. When you lead with integrity, every other principle naturally follows: truthfulness, diligent work, high ethics, and strong morals. It governs how I run my business, how I show up in my personal life, and how I treat others.
