Beyond the Title: Leading with Purpose, Empowering Communities, and Inspiring Change
From Classroom to Leadership: A Journey of Purpose, Service, and Empowering Others
Leadership has never been simply about a title for me. It has always been about purpose, service, and the courage to create opportunities for others.
Throughout my more than 26 years in education, I have had the privilege of serving in leadership roles ranging from classroom instruction and school improvement to becoming one of Georgia's youngest superintendents. Each experience has reinforced one powerful lesson: The greatest impact of leadership is not what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we make possible for others.
As an education leader, I have dedicated my career to strengthening schools, developing leaders, building strategic partnerships, and advocating for children and families. My work has taught me that education is not limited to what happens inside a classroom. A child's ability to succeed is also influenced by the conditions in which they live, the opportunities they receive, and the community that surrounds them.
Today, as Executive Director of an Education Foundation, I continue that mission by helping connect resources, partnerships, and opportunities to students and educators. Initiatives such as Beds with Bibb, which supports children who lack adequate sleeping arrangements, remind us that meeting students' basic needs is essential to supporting academic success.
Beyond my work in education, I am the CEO of Leaders-first, an organization focused on leadership development, mentorship, and organizational growth. I believe effective leadership requires more than managing systems. It requires developing people, building sustainable practices, and empowering others to recognize their potential.
My journey has also led me into authorship. Through my book, Coping with the Culture, I encourage individuals to find their voices, navigate life's challenges, manage emotional triggers, and embrace personal growth. The message behind my writing is simple: Our circumstances may shape our experiences, but they do not have to determine our future.
As a woman in leadership, I understand that the journey is not always easy. There are moments when your vision will be questioned, your contributions overlooked, or your path challenged. Yet those experiences can strengthen your determination and deepen your purpose.
I have learned that we cannot allow the need for validation to hinder our victory. We must have the confidence to run our own race, remain grounded in our values, and continue moving forward even when the journey looks different from what we imagined.
My vision for the future includes expanding opportunities for emerging leaders, strengthening educational and community partnerships, and developing creative wellness resources that help individuals and families find moments of peace, reflection, and healing.
I want women everywhere to understand that influence is not reserved for those with the loudest voices or the most prestigious titles. Influence begins when we recognize our ability to make a difference and choose to act.
My message to aspiring women leaders is this: Never underestimate the power of your experiences, your voice, or your purpose. You don't have to wait for permission to lead, and you don't have to dim your light to make others comfortable.
Lead with courage. Serve with compassion. Create opportunities for others.
And above all, remember that your greatest legacy will not be the title you held, but the lives you touched along the way.
Run your race. Own your voice. Lead with purpose.
