BURNOUT

A journey through darkness toward the light of survival and redemption.

The wave is approaching.

I can feel it building in the distance.

It is almost time to brace for impact.

Wait… what?

No. Not yet. This cannot be happening.

The wave is closer now.

There is no avoiding what is coming.

It is time to brace for impact.

But I am not ready.

I do not want to be ready.

Too late.

The wave is here.

Take a breath.

Prepare yourself.

Hold on.

SLAM. IMPACT.

I am swept from the ground.

The current is powerful and unrelenting.

I am moving without control,

yet I can still see where I am going.

I am still holding my breath.

There is light above me.

My lungs are beginning to burn.

My strength is fading,

but I know I need to keep going.

Just a little longer.

Still holding my breath.

More light.

I am getting closer,

but I am no longer certain I can make it.

Then, through the water, I see someone.

Help.

Hold on a little longer.

Relief.

Air fills my lungs.

A mask provides the oxygen

I could no longer find for myself.

Help has arrived.

The wave has passed,

but exhaustion remains.

I survived the impact.

I survived the current.

I found my way back to the surface.

Now…

Can I rest?
