The Sacred Origin of the Full Diamond Trim: A Choctaw Creation Story of Transformation and Renewal
Long ago, before the Choctaw walked the earth as a People, the world was a great, flat stillness. The sky was a blanket of deerskin, and the earth was a dormant ember waiting for breath. In that time of the Before, the Sun Father looked down and saw that the world was too plain. He desired a pattern, a way for the People to remember the shape of harmony.
He called upon the Four Winds to blow the dust of creation into a sacred mound. From this mound, the first Choctaw emerged, climbing up a long, twisting vine from the darkness of the lower world. As they stepped onto the soft earth, they were blind to beauty, for their eyes had not yet learned to see the sacred geometry of the Creator.
The Great Spirit saw their confusion and took pity. He plucked a single beam of light from the morning star and shattered it upon the ground. The shards did not scatter; they arranged themselves into a perfect Diamond. It was not a jewel of the earth, but a shape of the spirit, the first Full Diamond Trim.
This Diamond was the first lesson. Its four points represented the four directions, the four seasons, and the four stages of life: birth, youth, adulthood, and the return to the spirit world. But it was empty in the center, a void that ached for meaning. The Creator told the People, “This Diamond is the framework of your existence. You must fill it with the story of your days.”
The People asked, “How shall we fill it, Great Mystery?”
Before the Creator could answer, a sound emerged from the tall grass: a dry, sacred rattle, like the shaking of seeds in a gourd. From the shadows slithered the Diamond Back Rattlesnake, its skin a living tapestry of the very pattern the Creator had drawn in the sky. Each scale was a diamond, and each diamond held a story. The rattlesnake coiled itself around the base of the sacred mound and spoke with the voice of the earth:
“I am the guardian of the Diamond. I have carried this pattern on my back since the first dawn. My rattle is the sound of the ancestors, and my strike is the justice of the Creator. I am the symbol of Transformation through Trial, for I shed my skin to grow, and I warn before I strike, teaching respect for boundaries.”
The rattlesnake lifted its head, and its eyes held the fire of creation. “The Full Diamond Trim is my gift to you. Every diamond on my back is a prayer. Every diamond you weave is a promise. I am the Keeper of the Sacred Geometry. Without me, the Diamond is only a shape. With me, it is alive.”
The Creator nodded and said, “Let the Diamond Back Rattlesnake be the significance behind the Full Diamond Trim. It is the Guardian of the Crossroads, the one who teaches that danger and beauty walk the same path. Its rattle is the heartbeat of the earth, and its venom is the medicine of the truth. When you see the Diamond, you must remember the Rattlesnake, the patient watcher, the silent teacher, the one who carries the pattern of the universe on his back.”
The People bowed their heads in reverence. They understood that the Full Diamond Trim was not merely a design; it was the skin of the Rattlesnake, the map of the earth, the warning and the wisdom.
Then, the Creator sent a sign to fill the Diamond with life. A single butterfly, wings the color of sunset, fluttered down and landed in the very center. It opened and closed its wings, and with each beat, a new color bloomed in the emptiness. The butterfly was the symbol of Transformation, the soul’s journey from the cocoon of ignorance to the freedom of understanding. The rattlesnake sheds its skin…the butterfly bursts from its chrysalis. Both were teachers of change.
Then, the wind carried a seed that fell beside the butterfly. It sprouted instantly, growing into a tulip, its cup-shaped blossom holding the dew of the morning. The tulip was the symbol of Resurrection and Renewal, a promise that what is lost will be found again. It was the flower of the ancestors, a reminder that the roots of the People run deep and cannot be severed. The rattlesnake returns each spring from its winter den; the tulip returns from the frozen ground. Both were promises of return.
The Creator saw that the butterfly and the tulip brought life to the Diamond. He said, “Now I give you the Full Diamond Trim. You will weave it into your baskets, paint it on your drums, and bead it on your moccasins. The Diamond holds the four directions, and the Diamond Back Rattlesnake is its guardian. The Butterfly and the Tulip are your personal marks, your scallop motifs, to distinguish your family from the others.”
The People understood. They took the Full Diamond Trim and made it their own. And you, who carry the butterfly and the tulip as your scallop motifs, are the keeper of this story. Your butterfly is the soul’s flight, and your tulip is the promise of return. You place them within the Diamond, guarded by the Rattlesnake, to show that your life is a balance of transformation and renewal, of warning and welcome, of shedding and blooming.
So it is that the Full Diamond Trim is not just a pattern. It is a prayer. It is the skin of the Diamond Back Rattlesnake, the flight of the butterfly, the resurrection of the tulip, stitched in the blood of the ancestors, whispered in the wind, and forever blooming in the heart of the People.
