Conservation Can Start With a Smile

What if animals could talk?

That question helped spark Nature Talks Back™. I imagined what animals might say about the things we leave behind, the spaces we share, and the choices we make. Some of those messages would probably be heartfelt. Others might be a little sarcastic.

There was humor in the idea, but there was also a purpose: to give animals and nature a voice and invite people to listen.

Conservation is a serious subject. But does every conversation about it have to begin with a serious tone?

I don't think so.

Sometimes a smile is an opening.

An Invitation to Care

There is a lot competing for our attention. We hear about problems, responsibilities, and all the things we should be doing differently. Even when a message matters, it can be hard to take in one more demand.

I wanted to explore a different starting point. What happens when a message makes someone laugh before it asks them to think?

"Litter Makes Me Bitter" gives a fox a little attitude and a message worth hearing. The humor gives someone a reason to pause-and perhaps an opening to talk about what litter means for the animals living alongside us.

A funny phrase cannot explain every conservation issue. Facts, education, and difficult conversations all have a place. But humor can be one way into that larger conversation.

You don't have to put the entire lesson in the first hello.

What Leadership Taught Me

Over more than 25 years in management, I learned to pay attention to how I approached people.

Before I could help someone grow, I needed to understand them. What mattered to them? What made them hesitate? What would help them feel comfortable enough to ask a question or try something new?

That experience shapes how I'm building Nature Talks Back™.

I want people to feel welcome in the conversation, whether they spend every weekend outdoors or are just beginning to notice the wildlife in their own neighborhood. They shouldn't need the right vocabulary or a perfect record to care.

For me, empathy means remembering that everyone begins somewhere. Humor offers a familiar place to begin.

The Joke Has a Purpose

There is a responsibility in using humor thoughtfully.

I want the humor to come from imagining an animal's personality or giving nature a chance to speak up. I don't want it to make light of suffering or turn people into the punchline.

A fox with something to say about litter can be funny and still carry a sincere message. That balance is what interests me: creating something approachable that gives people a reason to look a little closer.

Through Nature Talks Back™, apparel and artwork are ways to carry those messages into everyday life. A design might catch someone's eye at the grocery store or start a conversation between friends. My hope is that the conversation continues beyond the shirt.

Building Something People Can Join

As a founder, I'm learning that building a mission-led business means making choices about how that mission feels to other people.

For me, that means leaving room for warmth, curiosity, creativity, and joy. Those are part of why we love nature in the first place.

I want to build a community where people can share that love and find their own ways to act on it. Picking up a piece of trash. Paying attention to an animal's habitat. Asking a question. Learning something and passing it along.

A smile doesn't guarantee any of those things. But it can be the beginning of an exchange-and that beginning matters.

Nature Talks Back™ started with a question: What if animals could talk?

I'm building it around another one:

What might happen if a smile opened the door to a conversation about conservation?

Through Nature Talks Back™, apparel and artwork are ways to carry those messages into everyday life.
