Have you ever caught yourself holding on to something long after your heart had already let go?
Maybe it was a leadership role. A board position. A business relationship. A ministry opportunity. From the outside, everything looked fine. People respected your position, your voice was valued, and doors continued to open. Yet something inside you kept whispering, This isn’t where you’re supposed to stay.
Most of us don’t talk about those moments because leaving a good opportunity is often harder than leaving a bad one.
When something is unhealthy, the decision seems obvious. But when the people are kind, the mission is worthwhile, and the opportunity carries influence, walking away can feel confusing. Sometimes we convince ourselves we’re staying because we’re loyal.
Sometimes we’re staying because we’re comfortable. And sometimes, if we’re honest, we’re staying because we’re afraid of losing access.

The longer I’ve worked with leaders, the more I’ve realized that this struggle has very little to do with opportunity and everything to do with identity. Somewhere along the way, it’s easy to believe our value is tied to the rooms we’re invited into rather than the purpose we’re called to fulfill. The problem is that purpose and proximity aren’t always the same thing.
- Some rooms stretch you.
- Some rooms prepare you.
- Some rooms simply become familiar.
Knowing the difference is part of becoming a mature leader.
How do you know it’s time to evaluate your alignment?
You may notice you’re making excuses for things you once questioned. You find yourself protecting relationships at the expense of your convictions. The work no longer energizes you, but you hesitate to step away because you’re afraid another opportunity won’t come.
You begin making decisions based on preserving your position instead of protecting your peace.
Those are often the first signs that you’ve drifted from alignment.
What can you do?
Start by being honest with yourself.
- Ask whether you’re still growing or simply maintaining.
- Ask whether your values are stronger than your desire to belong.
- Ask whether you would still choose this opportunity if no title came with it.
Those questions aren’t always comfortable, but they have a way of exposing what fear tries to hide.
Then, give yourself permission to trust that walking away from one season doesn’t mean walking away from your purpose. Leadership isn’t about holding on to every opportunity. It’s about recognizing which opportunities still fit the person you’re becoming.
A Final Thought
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that every season has an assignment. Some seasons are meant to build you. Others are meant to launch you. The mistake isn’t leaving too soon. The mistake is staying so long that you begin sacrificing your values just to keep your place.
Choose alignment.
Your purpose is worth more than your access.
