Five Tips for Someone New to the PR Industry

1. Master the Art of Storytelling

PR is about telling compelling stories that resonate with audiences. Learn how to craft narratives that align with your brand’s voice and values. Whether you're writing a press release, pitching to media, or creating social content, your ability to tell a clear, engaging story will set you apart and get you noticed!

Tip: Read A LOT—news articles, blogs, and brand case studies—to understand different storytelling styles. I keep a spreadsheet of article links that contain story telling or phrasing of things I like to look back on for future inspiration.

2. Build and Nurture Relationships

Relationships are everything in PR. From journalists and influencers to internal stakeholders and clients, your success depends on your ability to connect and communicate effectively. Be genuine, responsive, and respectful in every interaction. You’re always on.

Tip: Network as much as possible. Attend events, go out for coffee, find ways to be in spaces with the people you need in your network!

3. Stay Informed

The media landscape is constantly evolving and the news cycle is fast. Stay on top of industry trends, emerging platforms, and current events. This will help you spot opportunities, anticipate challenges, and provide informed counsel to your team or clients.

Tip: Subscribe to PR or industry specific newsletters, follow thought leaders on LinkedIn, and set Google Alerts for key topics in addition to using media monitoring platforms.

4. Embrace Feedback and Learn Fast

PR moves quickly, and you won’t always get it right. Be open to constructive criticism and use it to grow. If your pitch didn’t land the way you wanted it to, pivot, learn from it and move forward!

Tip: Keep a running list of lessons learned or ideas for next time from each project you execute.

5. Be Organized and Detail-Oriented

From managing media lists to coordinating events, PR involves juggling many moving parts. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail will help you stay on top of deadlines and deliver high-quality work consistently.

Tip: Use tools to help you keep track! PR professionals wear many hats. I love Microsoft To Do and Planner.

Final Advice

PR is a dynamic and rewarding field that thrives on creativity, connection, and continuous learning. With the right mindset and these foundational tips, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful career. Have fun, give it your all, and learn from your mistakes! Every situation can be a teachable moment.
