From Doubt to Determination: A Journey of Courage and Persistence

I still remember sitting in my first PhD class in the United States, listening carefully, yet feeling as though the words were moving faster than I could catch them. I held my pen, hoping to write something meaningful, but instead, I was trying to keep up, understand, and belong.

My journey is deeply personal, yet it reflects the quiet realities of many women and multilingual students who leave everything familiar behind to follow a dream. Coming from Bangladesh, a developing country, to the United States was not just a physical move across continents; it was an emotional and cultural transition into the unknown. I left behind my family, my routines, and a sense of comfort where everything made sense. In this new environment, even simple things—food, communication, daily interactions—felt unfamiliar and, at times, overwhelming.

When I began my PhD, I believed I was prepared. But the experience was far more demanding than I had imagined. There were moments when I struggled in ways that felt both visible and invisible. I remember sitting in class, trying to follow a lecture but missing key ideas because I could not process everything quickly enough. During discussions, I often hesitated, unable to respond as quickly as my peers. There were times when a professor asked me a question, and I could not answer right away—not because I did not understand, but because I needed time to process different accents and think in another language. In those moments, I questioned myself. I wondered if I truly belonged in that space.

Some days felt heavier than others. Academic expectations, cultural adjustment, and personal loneliness would converge all at once. Being far from home made even small challenges feel bigger. I missed familiar voices, familiar food, and the ease of being understood without needing to explain myself.

Over time, however, my perspective began to shift. I started to see that these challenges were not signs of inadequacy, but part of a deeper transformation. Each experience was shaping me—teaching me resilience, patience, and adaptability. What I once saw as limitations—my language and cultural differences—gradually became sources of strength. They influenced how I think, how I teach, and how I connect with others.

As a multilingual learner myself, I understand the quiet experiences many students carry—the hesitation before speaking, the fear of making mistakes, and the internal voice that questions whether they are good enough. I have lived through those moments. And I have also learned what it means to continue despite them. These experiences have shaped my purpose as an educator. I am committed to creating spaces where multilingual learners feel seen, valued, and comfortable being themselves—where challenges are understood as part of learning, not as failure. I want my students to know that it is okay to feel uncertain at times, but it is just as important to keep going, because their voices and identities matter.

I also learned to shift my focus. Instead of dwelling on what I lacked, I began to recognize what I carried with me—determination, persistence, and a strong sense of purpose. I came to understand that no journey is perfect, and that progress often comes through moments of discomfort.

Today, I carry my journey with pride. It has not been easy, but it has been meaningful. It has taught me to trust myself, to move forward even when the path feels unclear, and to believe that I belong where I am.

To every woman who carries a dream quietly in her heart—this is for you. The path may not be easy. You may face moments of doubt, feel limited by circumstances, or question your own strength. But even in those moments, do not stop. Keep moving, even if the steps are small. Your journey does not need to look like anyone else’s to be meaningful.

Hold on to your purpose. Trust that your voice matters, even when it trembles. The world does not need you to blend into the crowd—it needs your story, your courage, and your persistence. Every challenge you face is shaping you into someone stronger—someone capable of creating change.

So pursue your goals, wherever they may take you. Speak up, take space, and believe in yourself—even on the days it feels hardest. Because your story might be the reason another woman finds the courage to begin hers.
