From Shame to Strength
How Past Pain Became the Foundation for Leading with Compassion
From Shame to Strength: A Personal Narrative
For a long time, I lived in the shadow of my past, viewing my history through a lens of shame and regret. I focused on the fractures rather than the foundation, failing to see that those “wrong choices” were the building blocks of the woman I am today. Growing up, I navigated an absence of love that sent me on a relentless pursuit of fleeting glimpses of affection, and for years, I felt that the loss of my childhood innocence had permanently derailed my life.
Even as I grew professionally, imposter syndrome followed me. I lived in constant fear that I would be “found out”—that I didn’t truly deserve the opportunities that came my way. But today, I am no longer ashamed. I have realized that I am not the sum of my trauma, but a testament to the resilience it took to survive it. I have evolved from victim to survivor, and finally, to overcomer.
Today, I bring that hard-won peace into my role as a supervisor. I manage a team of six—four women and two men—who are all at varying stages of their careers and are more than thirty years my junior. I recognize in them the same flickering uncertainty and the search for belonging that I once felt so deeply.
My past heartbreak has been transformed into my greatest professional asset: a deep well of compassion and empathy. Because I know what it feels like to doubt my own worth, I am uniquely positioned to help my team members discover their strengths and build their confidence. I don’t just manage their tasks; I invest in their growth, helping them envision what future success looks like on their own terms. By drawing from my experiences, I offer them more than just administrative guidance—I offer them hope, showing them that our pasts do not define us, but they can certainly prepare us to lead others with heart and purpose.
