How Do You Navigate Uncertainty?
Diagnostic Design Thinking Group
Uncertainty often throws us into a bath of cortisol.
Are “what if” questions haunting you?
- What if I lose my job?
- What if my manager is someone I can’t work for?
- What if my compensation changes?
- What if we go through another M&A?
The first step is to pause and ask yourself: “What am I really feeling?”
Check your truth meter. Name the emotion, then state the opposite. Notice how that feels. Often, we feel relief—because many of the stories we tell ourselves are designed to justify a subconscious emotion rather than reflect reality.
Change can feel threatening because we fear loss. But what if it brought something new, something better? What if it was exactly the pivot you needed?
I saw this firsthand in big pharma when a massive change hit our high-performing team. Shock and disbelief ran rampant. Cortisol orchestrates fear-based thinking—but giving people space to talk through their fears, intentionally listening, and identifying the emotions behind the fear is a powerful way to help them feel heard and supported.
Even without a formal leadership title, you are a leader—for yourself and those around you. Finding a supportive group to navigate uncertainty is critical to personal success.
