How to sustain your energy as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?
Navigating Life's Energy with Grace and Spiritual Awareness
How to sustain your energy as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?
When I was in college, I was advised to experiment—experiment with courses, programs, coaches, extracurriculars, relationships, and careers. Maybe I was advised to experiment too much, which eventually led to burnout. That is when I realized that I take time to absorb experiences as a multi-sensory, fifth-dimensional human being.
What is a multi-sensory, fifth-dimensional human being?
According to Sonia Choquette, a sincere believer in the power of intuition and clairvoyance in a person’s everyday life, we all have an active life force within us, which is called the fifth dimension of perception. People who are highly in tune with their emotional and spiritual states are very likely to receive downloads in their bodies from the universe in the form of intuition. Intuition is very real, and it lives inside the body. That is why, in many religious customs, such as Buddhism (yoga) and Islam (namaz), the body is used as a means of worship.
What happens as a result of this bodily worship is that the body releases specks of trauma stored in our cells and rejuvenates the cells by reviving the life force within our bodies. You may ask me, “How is trauma stored in our cells?” According to Bessel van der Kolk, the author of The Body Keeps the Score, the human body forms an imprint of trauma on the genetic code of an individual, and the body has to go through a journey of tremendous trauma alleviation to release that genetic imprint and heal on a visceral, cellular level.
The more healed an individual is, the stronger and healthier their intuitive response. People in tune with their psychosomatic and emotional depths can be called “Highly Sensitive People.” They don’t just feel emotions strongly; the way they perceive the world is far deeper and almost all-consuming. In spiritual societies, these people may experience a spiritual awakening and cannot return to a third-dimensional way of thinking and perception. As an HSP, it is very easy to get overwhelmed by the constant current of energy that surrounds you.
How can you prevent overwhelm, burnout, and losing yourself as an HSP?
While I was told to experiment a lot—and I did, in the subjects I studied (from the Ottoman Empire and oceanography to user interface design and money, banking, and the economy, as well as entrepreneurship and Middle Eastern literature, among many others)—I had to expand my capacity to receive these teachings as a form of fifth-dimensional learning.
Before joining Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, I was conditioned to study one subject in depth, such as business studies. My college experience of heartbreak, exposure, and travel took me through stages of awakening into a fifth-dimensional way of thinking about and perceiving the world around me.
This is not a detour—I will now help you identify three specific ways that HSPs can safely and proactively navigate the world around them with discernment, ease, and enjoyment.
1) Have a meditative practice
I meditate five times a day, sometimes even six. It may sound like a nuisance at first, but taking short, fifteen-minute breaks throughout the day helps me align myself with the universe’s rhythm. This helps me release stored energy and clear my energy field. It keeps me grounded.
2) Have a body revival practice
Whether it is dance, yoga, or Pilates, getting the energy in your body moving is almost as important as oxygen. Not only is it a form of self-expression, but it also helps your body undergo an energetic shift and release negative thinking patterns.
Yes, negative thinking patterns—because the way your physical body influences your genetic code and the chemical composition of your cells also influences your thoughts. Trauma and emotions such as rage, anger, disgust, or distrust are often stored physically in the body and can manifest as illness. Changing how your body moves can significantly impact how you think and perceive reality.
3) Have a charity goal
Learn about an organization, institution, or person who is in need of money, attention, or friendship—all three constitute charity. Charity is given to someone who cannot return the same favor. It is giving without expectation, unlike an investment, which has a fixed rate of return over time.
Charity is giving without expectation, while increasing the frequency of love and shifting your energy from self-absorbed to radiant. Giving a portion of what you have not only increases what you originally had but also signals abundance to the universe, shifting your energetic frequency.
You don’t give charity solely to help others—you also give it to help yourself. Yes, as human beings, we are that in need of connection and support. According to Talmudic wisdom, the person who gives charity is often more in need than the person who receives it.
Now you may ask—Amna, how do practicing meditation, maintaining a physical revival practice, and giving to charity alleviate the suffering of an HSP?
For an HSP, connecting with stronger energetic frequencies is a highly advanced survival mechanism. The universe is a microcosm, and all human beings are connected through shared energy, vibrations, and energetic cords. When we embrace the laws of energy and recognize the spiritual dimension within us, we allow these metaphysical realities to manifest in our daily lives.
This influx of light from a divine source helps HSPs strengthen their energetic fields so that, no matter what they are doing or how much they are doing, they remain protected by a surrounding sense of clarity and stability.
