Keep Going
How Persistence and Purpose Transform Barriers Into Strength
Success is often portrayed as a straight path:
Set a goal, work hard, and eventually you arrive.
But for many of us—especially women from historically underrepresented communities—the journey is rarely linear.
It is uneven.
It is uncertain.
And at times, it can feel entirely out of reach.
I Know That Reality Firsthand
I was raised in a single-parent household where resources were extremely limited.
There were seasons when government assistance was necessary, and expectations were often shaped more by circumstance than by possibility.
Like many others, I navigated:
- Financial hardship
- Social pressures
- Limited access
- Moments where stepping back would have been easier than pushing forward
There were times when pursuing my goals required sacrificing comfort, time, and stability.
But I kept going.
Not because the path was clear—
But because the purpose was.
Representation Matters
Today, as a literacy specialist and educator, I carry more than my personal journey.
I carry the responsibility of representation.
The reality is that Latina women remain significantly underrepresented at the highest levels of education.
This underrepresentation reflects systemic barriers, including:
- Financial limitations
- Restricted access to mentorship
- Cultural expectations
- Institutional systems not designed with us in mind
These challenges are real.
But so is progress.
And progress happens every time someone chooses not to stop.
Persistence Over Perfection
What I have learned is this:
Achieving your goals is not about waiting for perfect conditions.
It is about persistence when conditions are far from perfect.
It means continuing when:
- You are tired
- You are uncertain
- You are the first in your family to attempt something extraordinary
- You do not see people who look like you in the spaces you are entering
Often, the difference between those who reach their goals and those who do not is not talent.
It is not always opportunity.
It is the decision to keep moving forward anyway.
There Is Rarely a “Perfect Time”
Too many people postpone their dreams while waiting for ideal circumstances.
But the truth is:
The right time rarely arrives.
You move forward with what you have.
You build as you go.
You learn through the process.
There were many moments in my own journey when I did not feel fully prepared.
But I showed up anyway.
I studied anyway.
I worked anyway.
And over time, those consistent choices built momentum.
That is how meaningful progress happens.
Purpose Makes Perseverance Possible
For me, the driving force has always been larger than myself.
As an educator, I witness every day how literacy shapes a child’s future.
I see multilingual learners navigating systems that do not always recognize their strengths.
I see children who are taught—directly or indirectly—to view multilingualism as a limitation rather than a gift.
But as someone who was once an English language learner myself, I know this truth:
Multilingualism is power.
It is an asset.
It is strength.
That understanding fuels my work and deepens my commitment.
Because when your purpose is clear, it becomes easier to persevere when challenges arise.
And challenges will arise.
But so will resilience.
A Final Message
If there is one message I hope to leave with you, it is this:
You do not need a perfect path to reach your goals.
You need:
- Persistence
- Discipline
- Courage
- A willingness to continue when quitting feels easier
Your background does not disqualify you.
Your challenges do not define your limits.
They shape your strength.
And if you stay the course, those hardships will not become the end of your story—
They will become part of the powerful story of how you rose.
