Lead with Compassion

The Art of Curiosity, Connection, and Care

Entrepreneurship is often associated with ambition, strategy, and the drive to succeed. We are encouraged to move quickly, embrace growth, and turn our ideas into results. But what if the foundation of sustainable success lies not only in what we build, but in how we treat ourselves, connect with others, and respond to the world around us?

As an artist, creative facilitator, and entrepreneur, I believe that compassion is an essential leadership practice. It invites us to remain curious when we face uncertainty, build authentic connections rather than operate in isolation, and care for ourselves and others as we pursue meaningful work.

My approach to entrepreneurship is rooted in three values: integrity, compassion, and harmony. These values influence how I make decisions, build partnerships, and design creative experiences that support authentic expression, wellbeing, and belonging.

Curiosity helps us adapt. Connection helps us thrive. Care helps us sustain what matters.

Together, they offer a more human approach to entrepreneurship-one that makes room for both personal growth and collective wellbeing.

Curiosity: The Art of Adaptability

As an artist, I have learned that creativity rarely follows a perfectly predictable path. A painting may take an unexpected direction, a material may respond differently than anticipated, or an unplanned discovery may lead to something more meaningful than the original idea.

Entrepreneurship requires that same openness.

Business plans change. Resources shift. Partnerships evolve. Sometimes, the approach we believed would work no longer serves our vision. In these moments, curiosity allows us to pause, ask questions, and explore new possibilities rather than respond with fear or frustration.

Instead of asking, "Why isn't this working?" we can ask, "What can I learn from this, and what else might be possible?"

Curiosity does not mean abandoning our goals. It means remaining flexible about how we reach them. When we approach challenges with a willingness to learn, we create space for innovation, experimentation, and growth.

It also requires curiosity about ourselves. What motivates our decisions? Which expectations are we trying to meet? Are we pursuing opportunities because they align with our values or because we are afraid to say no?

These questions help us build businesses that reflect who we are rather than simply responding to external pressure.

Connection: The Art of Building Together

Entrepreneurship can feel lonely when we believe we must figure everything out ourselves. Yet meaningful work rarely happens in isolation. Our businesses are shaped by the people we collaborate with, the communities we serve, and the relationships that support our growth.

When I began developing my creative practice into community-centered programming, I wanted to make art accessible while creating opportunities for people to reconnect with themselves and one another.

Rather than building everything independently, I chose to partner with local nonprofits and pursue city grants that support community-based creative experiences. These partnerships allow me to bring art workshops into community spaces, where participants can explore cultural art forms, express themselves creatively, and experience the value of learning and creating together.

This approach has shaped how I understand business growth. We do not always need to build more by doing more alone. Sometimes, we can create greater impact by connecting existing strengths, sharing resources, and working toward a common purpose.

Connection begins with listening. It means understanding the needs of the people we serve, respecting different perspectives, and creating partnerships grounded in trust and mutual contribution.

When we approach relationships with curiosity and respect, collaboration becomes more than a business strategy. It becomes an opportunity to cultivate belonging, shared learning, and collective possibility.

Care: The Art of Creating Sustainable Balance

Compassionate leadership also asks us to consider how we care for ourselves while caring for our work and others.

Many entrepreneurs are deeply committed to their visions. That commitment can inspire extraordinary creativity and perseverance, but it can also lead us to overextend ourselves, ignore our needs, and measure our worth by how much we accomplish.

I believe that balance is not about dividing every hour equally between work and life. It is about recognizing what each season requires while remaining connected to our values, wellbeing, and boundaries.

Care means understanding that rest can support creativity, that saying no can protect our integrity, and that asking for help can strengthen rather than diminish our leadership.

For women entrepreneurs who navigate multiple responsibilities and expectations, this can require a fundamental shift: moving away from the belief that success depends on how much we can carry, toward the understanding that sustainable success depends on how wisely we use our energy and resources.

Care extends beyond ourselves, too. It influences how we treat collaborators, compensate and recognize contributions, communicate expectations, and design our businesses to serve people with dignity.

When care becomes part of our decision-making, we begin to build businesses that value not only outcomes, but also the human experience of creating them.

Harmony: Aligning Values with Action

Curiosity, connection, and care come together through harmony.

For me, harmony is not about making everything perfect or avoiding differences. It is about creating alignment between our values, actions, relationships, and aspirations.

In my own work, integrity means being honest about what I can offer and making decisions that reflect my principles. Compassion reminds me to consider the human experience behind every interaction. Harmony guides me toward relationships and collaborations in which different people and strengths can contribute meaningfully.

These values also help me navigate the practical realities of entrepreneurship. By working with community partners and seeking grant funding, I can align my creative vision with community needs and available resources. This allows me to pursue meaningful impact while building a practice that is grounded in collaboration rather than isolated effort.

Harmony does not eliminate the challenges of running a business. Instead, it gives us a compass for navigating them. It helps us ask whether our growth is sustainable, whether our partnerships reflect mutual respect, and whether our work remains connected to the purpose that inspired us to begin.

A More Compassionate Way Forward

Leading with compassion does not require us to abandon ambition, avoid difficult decisions, or lower our standards. It asks us to expand our understanding of success.

We can be curious enough to adapt when circumstances change, intentional enough to nurture authentic relationships, and compassionate enough to protect the wellbeing that makes our work sustainable.

We can build businesses that support both individual aspirations and collective flourishing. We can recognize that meaningful growth is not only about what we achieve, but also about what we make possible for others.

My journey as an artist and entrepreneur continues to teach me that creativity is not simply about producing something beautiful. It is also about learning to see differently, embracing uncertainty, and discovering new ways to connect.

The same is true of leadership.

When we lead with curiosity, connection, and care, we create space for a more harmonious approach to entrepreneurship-one rooted in integrity, strengthened by relationships, and guided by compassion.

Perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves is not only, "How can I grow my business?" but also, "How can I grow in a way that honors myself, supports others, and contributes to the world I want to help create?"

For me, that is the art of leading with compassion.
