Her Story

About Umayal

Umayal Annamalai is a visual artist, creative educator, and community facilitator based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the founder of Creative Harmony Arts. Trained as an architect at the University of Madras in India, she later moved to the United States and spent a decade as a stay-at-home mom. During a period of self-discovery, she returned to her creative roots, and she has since built more than seven years of experience helping people express their authentic selves through art. Her work is grounded in the South Indian ritual tradition of kolam, intuitive abstraction, and somatic creative practice, with themes of healing, belonging, and feminine sovereignty.

As an artist, Umayal exhibits in local galleries, creating visual and sensory environments through geometric forms, layered textures, movement, and color that invite viewers to feel as well as see. Her series explore ancestral memory, identity, and boundaries as places of protection, connection, and transformation. As a facilitator, she leads workshops, public art experiences, and creative healing programs for women, youth, and communities, often with grant support from the North Carolina Arts and Science Council. Her approach combines embodiment, play, and cultural storytelling to guide participants from exhaustion toward expression, self-trust, and relational harmony.

A natural bridge builder, Umayal serves on the board of the nonprofit She Dreams in Color and volunteers at local art festivals and cultural initiatives, including sharing her native language with the next generation. She credits her success to perseverance and a firm commitment to protecting time for her own creative practice. Guided by integrity, compassion, joy, honesty, and transparency, she encourages emerging creatives to practice self-compassion, embrace patience, and release perfectionism, believing that art is a living bridge between the inner world and the shared world where belonging begins.
