Maybe You’re Not Lazy… The Truth About Procrastination, Labels, and Becoming Who You’re Meant to Be
How the Stories We Tell Ourselves Keep Us Stuck—and How to Break Free
The Labels We Quietly Carry
The host shared a conversation he was having with his 18-year-old son—
A young man trying to find his footing, yet already describing himself as lazy.
A little later, someone else casually added:
“I’ve just never been a morning person.”
And I found myself pausing.
Not because these statements were unusual…
But because of how easily we accept them as truth.
The Labels We Quietly Carry
At some point in our lives, we all begin to describe ourselves in simple ways:
“I’m not disciplined.”
“I procrastinate.”
“I’ve never been consistent.”
“I’m just not that kind of person.”
And without realizing it, we begin to live into them.
Not because they are true…
But because they are familiar.
A Moment I Caught Myself
And I’ll be honest—I’ve caught myself doing this too.
Not long ago, I was stretching into a new level—
Working on my website, building new projects, and setting bigger goals than ever before.
It felt exciting. Purposeful. Aligned.
But quietly… something else started to slip.
My workouts became less frequent.
Calling a friend felt like “too much.”
Even small things started feeling like they didn’t fit into my day.
Not because I didn’t care…
But because I kept telling myself:
“I just don’t have the time right now.”
And then one day, I paused.
Because that statement… wasn’t entirely true.
I wasn’t out of time.
I was avoiding something.
It Wasn’t Laziness… It Was Discomfort
When I looked a little deeper, I realized:
I wasn’t being lazy.
I was feeling stretched.
A little overwhelmed.
And stepping into a bigger version of myself.
And instead of acknowledging that…
I had subtly shifted into avoidance.
Which is exactly what we call procrastination.
And as many experts now agree—procrastination isn’t about time.
It’s about emotion.
We avoid what feels uncomfortable.
When the Label Becomes the Crutch
Here’s where it gets subtle.
If I had continued saying,
“I just don’t have time,”
I could have stayed there.
Comfortably stuck.
Because labels—especially the quiet ones—
give us permission not to change.
“I’m lazy.”
“I procrastinate.”
“I’m not that kind of person.”
They explain the behavior…
But they also lock it in.
The Shift That Changes Everything
The moment things changed for me was simple.
I stopped labeling…
and I started getting curious.
Instead of:
“I don’t have time,”
I asked:
“What am I avoiding right now?”
And the answer wasn’t harsh.
It was honest.
I was stretching into something new…
and part of me wanted to retreat into what felt easier.
And once I saw that clearly…
I could choose differently.
Growth Doesn’t Always Feel Good
One of the biggest lessons I continue to learn is this:
Growth doesn’t always feel exciting.
Sometimes it feels uncomfortable.
Sometimes it feels inconvenient.
Sometimes it feels like resistance.
But that doesn’t mean something is wrong.
It often means something is changing.
A More Empowering Way to See Yourself
What if instead of saying:
“I’m lazy,”
You said:
“I’m navigating discomfort.”
What if instead of:
“I procrastinate,”
You said:
“I’m learning how to move through resistance.”
Do you feel the difference?
One keeps you stuck.
The other moves you forward.
The Role of Maturity and Self-Leadership
There’s also a deeper truth here.
Part of becoming is doing things we don’t feel like doing—
Not from pressure,
but from purpose,
from responsibility,
from self-leadership.
Because the person you’re becoming…
doesn’t wait for motivation.
She moves with intention.
Final Reflection
Perhaps you’re not lazy.
Perhaps you’ve simply been standing at the edge of something that’s asking you to grow.
And maybe today is the perfect moment to notice the label you’ve been carrying…
and gently choose something more aligned with who you are becoming.
