Mentorship Matters
The power of leaders who see your potential and champion your success from day one.
“May you find a leader who treats you like they’ve been waiting their whole life to work with you.”
This quote stopped me in my tracks because I know what it feels like to experience this kind of leadership.
When I interviewed for my current role, I met with 16 different leaders throughout the process. Afterward, my future boss asked how I felt it went. I told her honestly: 15 of the conversations felt seamless, but one felt off.
What happened next has stayed with me.
She was so deeply invested in setting me up for success from the very beginning that she arranged for me to meet with that leader again—not because she doubted me, but because she wanted that leader to see what the other 15 had already seen and to have complete confidence in my abilities before I ever stepped into the role.
That moment told me everything I needed to know about the kind of leader she is.
Great leaders don’t just hire talent; they advocate for it. They remove barriers, create opportunities, and champion people even before they’ve had the chance to fully prove themselves.
That experience reinforced something I believe deeply: leadership at its best is about seeing potential, investing in people, and making sure they have every opportunity to thrive.
I’ve been fortunate to experience that kind of leadership firsthand, and it’s exactly the kind of leader I strive to be for others.
May we all find leaders who believe in us as fiercely as Susan Grant believed in me, and may we become those leaders for others.
