Overview and Surprise Review: 5 Stars!

Review – Grand Hyatt SFO

Hotel: Grand Hyatt SFO

Room Type: Grand Suite, King Bed

Cost: $4,000 USD / 2 nights

Trip Type: Solo (1 person)

Location: San Francisco, CA (SFO Airport)

Rating: 4.0/5.0

The Grand Hyatt SFO is an exceptional property. Hyatt truly demonstrates why it belongs in the luxury tier with this hotel. A 351-room airport hotel connected directly to the airport via the pre-security AirTrain system on airport grounds, it stands among the best airport hotels in the world.

This is a luxurious hotel in a prime location and a must-stay destination for avgeeks (aviation enthusiasts). While it is not the most luxurious hotel I have ever stayed in, it proves that ultimate luxury is not always necessary to create an outstanding experience.

The hotel offers excellent dining options, whether you want a sit-down meal at Quail & Crane Restaurant (more on that below) or quick grab-and-go items from Twin Peaks Market that can be enjoyed in your room or while rushing to catch a flight. The Grand Hyatt SFO provides service levels that are virtually unmatched for an airport hotel and fully earns its five-star designation.

The fitness center alone is impressive. It includes yoga mats, stretching balls, Peloton bikes, treadmills, recumbent bikes, free weights, circuit-training equipment, and more, along with complimentary towels and water.

What truly elevates the experience is the staff's willingness to accommodate guests in ways many hotels simply would not. For example, if you order Uber Eats or DoorDash, the hotel staff will happily bring your delivery to the first-floor valet lobby without hesitation.

Dining was another highlight. Quail & Crane offers an excellent blend of Western and Asian fusion cuisine. Twin Peaks Bar serves an impressive cocktail selection, and Twin Peaks Market carries standard grab-and-go items, including water, soda, juice, chips, and other snacks and convenience foods.

Then there are the views.

This is where being an avgeek becomes a major advantage, and the hotel fully embraces aviation enthusiasts. Guests are provided with an aircraft identification guide, binoculars, a pen, and a notepad to enhance the experience.

I spent hours in my suite watching aircraft land, taxi, park at the gates, push back, taxi to the runway, and take off. My suite offered panoramic views of the International Terminal and roughly half of the A Gates.

For aviation enthusiasts unfamiliar with SFO's layout, the International Terminal consists of one main hall with two gate areas: A Gates and G Gates. Star Alliance carriers primarily operate from the G Gates, while most other international airlines utilize the A Gates. Domestic operations occupy Terminals 1, 2, and 3, serving B, C, D, E, and F gates.

I found myself grabbing a pen and paper simply to keep track of all the aircraft movements I was watching.

Would I stay here again?

Absolutely.

My final rating is 4.0/5.0. The only reason it does not receive a perfect score is because, in my rating philosophy, a 5.0 represents the proverbial unicorn. No hotel receives a perfect score because every property, no matter how exceptional, has room for improvement.

If I had to identify one enhancement, it would be adding an on-site spa—but admittedly, that criticism feels unnecessarily nitpicky and somewhat unfair to what is already an outstanding airport hotel experience.

Final Rating: 4.0 / 5.0
