Retirement is followed by a dash in midair and not a full stop

Retirement Isn't a Full Stop. It's the Dash in Midair.

Individuals who are retired have no problem expressing and showing their joy about retirement. As a matter of fact, some will say, "I am happily retired," rather than simply saying, "I'm retired."

Given the universal understanding of the word retired, and as a retiree myself, I would like to offer my personal definition through the eyes of youthful exuberance: You have no one to obey and no obligation to do anything. You are free to wear your clothes back to front or front to back. You can eat, sleep, drink, and exercise whenever and wherever you want.

Being retired is an honor. You've earned it. You've done your time in the workplace, often through years of hard labor and sacrifice. Now that you are retired, slow the pace.

For balance, let me translate and elevate my youthful definition of retired to a more professional level: Retirement signifies a state of liberation from obligatory responsibilities and rigid structures. You've earned the right to indulge in activities at your own pace, wear your attire as you please, and savor every moment. Retirement is a badge of honor—a testament to your dedication and perseverance throughout your working years.

Keep Our Brains and Minds in a Place of Learning

However, that doesn't mean we should sit back in a constant state of relaxation or become lackadaisical about our newfound freedom. We should keep our minds engaged through learning, caring, and sharing so that we remain connected to the world and the people around us. We should also take steps to keep our bodies active and healthy.

There are many activities retirees can engage in to maintain their well-being. If there are young grandchildren around, it can be quite challenging to chase them down to get them to eat, drink, or take a bath. Whenever you find yourself in that situation, never grumble, because you are inadvertently participating in some much-needed, high-intensity exercise.

Consider Yourself a Fine Wine

If you are a retiree, consider yourself a fine wine.

It has been said countless times that fine wine improves with age. So, if you find yourself at home experiencing bouts of boredom, remember that you are fine wine. Get up, shake off the dullness of sloth, and put some of your wisdom to good use by becoming involved in volunteer work.

It is incredibly rewarding to work with people who are in need. It's also a wonderful way to learn about others—and even discover new things about yourself.

Retirees Are the Blueprint of a Great Community

Retirees are the blueprint for a great community. They enjoy going out to eat and maintaining an active social life. They love to travel, explore different places, and engage with different cultures.

Some retirees are eager to learn new skills, such as knitting, or pursue activities they never had time for while working. Learning to play tennis seems to be a favorite pastime for many. Others embrace adventure and try daring activities such as skydiving.

More importantly, retirees love to dance, even if it's only for a few minutes. Anything that gets the body moving and helps us feel alive is worthwhile.

I speak for myself when it comes to dancing—we must get those limbs moving. They may not be as supple as we would like them to be, but at least they're still working.

To Volunteer Is to Experience Gratitude

I find that I'm thoroughly enjoying my retirement. I'm my own boss, and I love it. There is something healthy about not living on someone else's timetable.

Because of that freedom, I am quite comfortable doing volunteer work. I love imparting knowledge to others and learning from them in return.

To volunteer is to experience gratitude.

A paid job is wonderful, but volunteering can be even more enriching. It uncovers the ingredients that connect culture with human development and reminds us of our shared humanity.

Life Has a Way of Throwing Curveballs

As proud retirees, many of us have financially planned and worked through the details of retirement. Yet, as we live it, life has a way of throwing curveballs our way—health concerns, rising healthcare costs, and the ever-increasing cost of daily living.

It is during these moments that our faith is tested and pushed to the brink.

Should we give up, or should we search for solutions?

Finding solutions can be especially challenging for those who cannot return to the workforce because of declining health or other circumstances. Speaking from a place of experience, I have a tenacious mind, and to me, giving up is not the best choice during stressful times, crises, or periods of adversity. It may be an option, but it should not be the first one we embrace.

Think positive thoughts.

Reflect on the old saying, "Where there's a will, there's a way."

Explore it.

Retirement is not a full stop.

It's the dash in midair—the space between what was and what still can be. It is an opportunity to continue learning, loving, serving, and growing.

And perhaps, with age and wisdom, it becomes one of life's most meaningful chapters.
