How Teachers Shape the Lives and Futures of Their Students Through Words and Expectations
Elementary Teachers' Influence
Elementary teachers may be among the most influential professionals in the world.
Doctors save lives. Engineers build bridges. Scientists make discoveries. Yet long before many children become doctors, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, or leaders, they spend their days sitting in elementary classrooms learning not only academic content, but also who they are becoming.
That is why the words teachers speak and write matter.
As another school year approaches and educators begin preparing classrooms, reviewing curriculum, attending professional development sessions, and organizing supplies, I would like to offer a simple reflection.
Before the meetings begin, before the lesson plans pile up, before the first bell rings, find a quiet space. Pour yourself a favorite drink — tea, coffee, juice, water, or perhaps something a little stronger if summer is truly ending. Sit for a few moments and think about a class you taught twenty years ago.
Where are they now?
Can you see your fingerprints on their lives?
Perhaps one became a nurse, a teacher, a business owner, a parent, a community leader, or simply a kind and productive citizen. Perhaps some still keep in touch. Perhaps others have long since moved on.
Whether they remember every lesson you taught is unlikely.
Whether they remember how you made them feel is another story.
A Teacher Who Chose to See Him Differently
Many years ago, I read a story shared among educators about a teacher who misjudged a student during the first days of school. Influenced by previous records, declining grades, shabby clothing, and classroom behavior, she formed conclusions before fully understanding his circumstances. Later, she learned that the child had been navigating profound personal loss and challenges far beyond his years.
What changed his life was not a new curriculum, a special program, or a test preparation strategy.
What changed his life was a teacher who eventually chose to see him differently.
That story has remained with me because it reminds us that children are often carrying burdens we cannot see. Behind every report card, every assessment score, every missing assignment, and every difficult day may be circumstances far beyond a child's control.
The Power of Words and Expectations
Research consistently demonstrates that teacher expectations influence student achievement, confidence, motivation, and self-belief. Children often rise — or fall — to the expectations communicated by the significant adults in their lives.
This does not mean ignoring challenges or lowering standards.
It means being intentional with our words.
A comment can become a label.
A label can become a belief.
A belief can influence the future.
Children often become the stories they hear repeatedly about themselves. Teachers, therefore, have a responsibility to ensure that their comments communicate not only where a child is, but also what they may become.
Spoken Over Them Before They Could Imagine It
Throughout my career, from Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Beetham Estates in Trinidad and Tobago, and beyond, I have often addressed young scholars as "Dr." long before they earned the title. Some may have thought it was wishful thinking. I saw it as a possibility. I wanted my students to hear success spoken over them before they could fully imagine it for themselves.
Today, many of those scholars are adults making meaningful contributions to their families, communities, and professions. Their accomplishments belong entirely to them, but I remain grateful for the opportunity educators have to help children see possibilities they may not yet see in themselves.
As parents and grandparents, we are children's first teachers. As educators, we provide guidance, structure, encouragement, and opportunities for growth during some of the most formative years of their lives.
A Year of Affirmation, Guidance, and Possibility
So, as we prepare for the 2026–2027 academic year, let us be intentional with every word we speak and every comment we write.
Long after lesson plans are forgotten and report cards are filed away, our words may still echo in the minds of the children we serve.
May those echoes be filled with hope.
May they be filled with possibility.
May they be filled with affirmation.
And when the year is over, may we once again sit quietly with our favorite drink in hand, look back on the children entrusted to us, and know that our words helped shape their futures.
Here's to a year of affirmation, guidance, community, leadership, and possibility.
