I simply said, “You do not need to wait on me, but if you are getting coffee for yourself, I would love to walk with you and hear about how you feel in your new role, whether you have any suggestions to make the current administrative processes smoother, and if there is anything else I can do to help you get acclimated.”
Over the next month, we spent more time together. As I observed her work ethic and growing interest in becoming a trainer, I decided to introduce her to some members of our management team, positioning her as a future trainer. Within a few months of shadowing me, she was leading her own classes, and she is now the Head of Supply Chain Learning.
My reason for writing this today is to encourage leaders to remain open to the ideas of others, regardless of their level within the organization.
