Shattered Wings, Still Flying: A Leader’s Journey from Grief to Purpose

By Tammy Bush

There are moments in life that redefine who you are—moments that don’t just challenge you, but completely transform you.

For me, that moment was the loss of my daughter, Tammurra.

Grief is not something you prepare for. It does not come with a roadmap or a timeline. It reshapes your identity, your faith, and your understanding of strength. In the midst of that pain, you are left with a choice:

Will this break me… or will this build something greater through me?

I chose purpose.

The Weight of Grief—and the Strength to Rise

Losing a child is a pain that changes everything. There were days when I struggled to find direction, to find meaning—even to find myself.

But I realized something powerful:

Pain, when processed with intention, can become purpose.

My journey did not end in grief. It evolved into a calling.

That calling led me to create Tam’s Beautiful Butterflies, a nonprofit organization rooted in healing, transformation, and mental health advocacy. What began as personal heartbreak has grown into a mission to serve others—especially those who feel unseen, unheard, and unsupported.

Because behind many smiles… there are silent battles.

Leadership Through Lived Experience

In today’s world, leadership is no longer defined by titles alone—it is defined by authenticity, impact, and the courage to address what others avoid.

My work spans mental health awareness, youth empowerment, and suicide prevention advocacy. Through programs like “I See You,” I work with young girls to build identity, confidence, and emotional wellness.

But my mission extends beyond programs—it includes policy.

As an advocate, I have worked to advance initiatives like SB2771, a legislative effort focused on increasing the visibility of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and integrating mental health awareness into schools.

Because awareness alone is not enough—

access, visibility, and education save lives.

Making Healing a Public Conversation

For far too long, mental health has been treated as a private struggle instead of a public priority.

We tell people to “reach out,” but fail to create environments where reaching out feels safe.

We say, “you are not alone,” but many still feel isolated.

This is why my work centers around one core principle:

We must make the invisible visible.

Visible resources

Visible conversations

Visible support systems

When people can see help, they are more likely to reach for it.

The Power of Owning Your Story

One of the most transformative lessons I’ve learned is this:

Your story is not something to hide—it is something to honor.

There is power in transparency. There is healing in truth. And there is impact in vulnerability.

Every experience—every setback, every moment of pain—carries the potential to help someone else survive their own.

You don’t have to have all the answers to make a difference.

You just have to be willing to show up honestly.

Still Flying: The Symbol of Transformation

The butterfly has become a central symbol in my life and work—not by coincidence, but by meaning.

Transformation is not easy. It requires isolation, growth, and change. But what emerges on the other side is something powerful.

A butterfly does not remain in the cocoon.

And neither should we remain in our pain.

Even after loss…

Even after heartbreak…

Even after life has tested us beyond what we thought we could endure…

We can still rise.

We can still grow.

We can still fly.

A Call to Women Who Are Leading Through Life’s Challenges

To every woman reading this—especially those carrying silent struggles while showing up for everyone else:

Your pain does not disqualify you—it equips you.

Your voice is needed.

Your story has purpose beyond what you can see today.

You are not defined by what happened to you.

You are defined by how you rise from it.

And even in your most difficult moments…

You are still becoming.
