Stay Out of My Lane!
Embracing Your Unique Path: Why Nontraditional Lanes Lead to True Fulfillment
I recently visited a college campus mixer to discuss my career path choices with current students. I witnessed curiosity and hopefulness throughout the conversation, as well as the moment when intrigue shifted to empowerment.
While having these engaging, in-depth conversations, I began to realize the impact of having nontraditional lanes. It was empowering to be the spokesperson encouraging others to flow with their gifting instead of walking the “straight and narrow.”
Academic institutions tend to promote the predictability of scholastic achievement by providing the narrowed perspective that a degree in Field A should lead to career options A, B, or C. Typically, the idea is to produce more gainfully employed graduates as soon as possible.
But there can be a failure in this approach.
What is your lane?
There is little grace given to the exploration of lanes for the unique souls in this world, in which the promotion of the “normal trajectory” silences gifts and possibilities. You weren't created to enter the world the same way everyone else does and leave it having followed the same prescribed path. It becomes crowded, mediocre, and unproductive.
In a previous article, Built Like This. Built for This, there was a challenge presented to understand that your uniqueness is your greatest strength. To be unapologetic about your individuality or how you are built. What you are built to do, you are also prepared to fulfill. Once this has been identified, you are ready to walk in your lane.
I remember being that undergraduate with hope but no direction. The lanes promoted did not generate internal excitement, nor did they create a sense of wholeness or completion. In this journey, there were attempts to turn opportunities that appeared aligned into the lane, but I learned over time that you can never alter the way that you are built and can never be satisfied with conformity.
Your lane can have multiple dimensions.
Consider this. Not only can you be operating in the wrong lane, but you could also come to the realization that your lane has multiple levels. No one is equipped to navigate or accomplish what you can accomplish in your lane. Your lane may require work, but it is simultaneously effortless because you were built for this.
You are encouraged, at the close of 2026, to stand with your feet planted and declare, Stay out of my lane!
The hope is mine.
The lane is mine.
The rules are mine.
The gifts are mine.
The future is mine.
The swag is mine.
The destination is mine.
