Still Becoming: The Power of Resilience, Faith, and Intentional Career Growth

By Amarachukwu Janell Medua-Onyekpe

There is something deeply meaningful about becoming. It is the process of growing into the person you aspire to be, learning through experiences, navigating uncertainty, and discovering that your capacity for growth is far greater than you once imagined.

I have come to understand that success is not simply about reaching a particular position, earning recognition, or achieving a professional milestone. It is equally about the discipline behind the achievements, the resilience developed through difficult seasons, the lessons gathered along the way, and the willingness to keep improving even when no one is watching.

My professional journey has taught me that becoming is not a destination. It is a continuous commitment to growth.

The foundation: A determination to excel

In 2018, I graduated with first-class honors in mass communication from the National Open University of Nigeria. I was also privileged to receive the Vice-Chancellor's Prize as the overall best graduating student in the Department of Mass Communication.

It was a milestone I remain deeply grateful for, not only because of the recognition but also because of the discipline, consistency, and determination that contributed to it.

At the time, I envisioned a future in broadcasting and media. I explored freelance presenting while working with Olive Multiconcept Communications Limited. I was passionate about communication and eager to build a career that allowed me to connect with people and make meaningful contributions.

However, my journey gradually unfolded in a different direction.

I delved into the customer experience profession through the retail sector with SPAR Multinational, subsequently gaining experience with African Delivery Technologies (KWIK) in the logistics and supply chain technology space. My career later progressed into the fintech, cybersecurity, and IT ecosystem at ATB Tech Limited, where I served as a customer success consultant, team lead, and eventually customer success manager.

Each stage came with its own demands. I had to learn, adapt, embrace responsibility, and continuously demonstrate that I could deliver beyond the expectations of my role.

What I initially considered a departure from my academic and professional aspirations eventually became a platform for discovering new strengths and developing a broader understanding of business, relationships, communication, and leadership.

Resilience is built in the moments nobody sees

It is easy to celebrate the visible milestones in a person's career. What we do not always see are the difficult decisions, the moments of uncertainty, the demanding responsibilities, and the determination required to keep moving forward.

My journey has not been without its challenges. There have been moments when I had to encourage myself, reassess my approach, learn unfamiliar things, and remind myself that growth requires patience and persistence.

I have learned that resilience is not necessarily the absence of doubt or difficulty. Sometimes, it is the decision to keep showing up, even when circumstances are less than ideal.

It is choosing to learn instead of becoming discouraged, seeking solutions instead of surrendering to challenges, and recognizing that temporary setbacks do not have to define the possibilities ahead.

I have also learned to be intentional about the quality of work I deliver. I believe in continuous learning, process improvement, operational efficiency, and taking ownership of responsibilities. I have never wanted to simply occupy a position; I have wanted to understand it, grow within it, improve what I could, and leave a positive contribution behind.

For me, professional excellence is not just about what you accomplish. It is also about how you accomplish it and the value others experience through your contribution.

Faith, ambition, and the courage to keep growing

Faith has remained an important part of how I navigate life and its uncertainties. I hold firmly to the belief that I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

That conviction gives me perspective, especially when the road ahead is unclear. It reminds me that ambition and faith can coexist with patience, humility, and gratitude.

I believe in setting meaningful goals, working diligently toward them, and remaining open to the opportunities that come along the way. Faith does not eliminate the responsibility to work, prepare, learn, and grow. Rather, it gives me strength and perspective as I pursue the things that matter.

Today, as a Client Strategy Partner at Medilo Advisory, I continue to build on the experiences that have shaped my professional development. My journey through customer experience, customer success, consulting, and leadership has reinforced my appreciation for people, strategic thinking, meaningful relationships, and creating value.

Yet, I do not consider myself a finished product.

I am still learning. Still stretching beyond familiar boundaries. Still discovering new ways to contribute. And I believe there is something beautiful about embracing that reality.

A message to women who are still becoming

To every woman who feels she should be further along, I want to offer this reminder: do not allow the pressure of timelines to diminish your appreciation of your progress.

You are not necessarily behind because your journey looks different. You are not less accomplished because your career has taken an unexpected turn. And you are not starting from nothing simply because you have decided to begin again.

Give yourself permission to learn, to evolve, to make adjustments, and to pursue opportunities that challenge your understanding of what is possible.

Be open to feedback. Invest in your development. Build relationships that encourage growth, and never underestimate the value of consistency. You do not have to know everything to begin, but you must be willing to learn as you go.

Celebrate your achievements, but do not allow them to make you complacent. Acknowledge your difficult seasons, but do not allow them to convince you that your story ends there.

Most importantly, understand that your worth is not determined solely by your professional title, your achievements, or the recognition you receive. Those things may reflect aspects of your journey, but they do not define the entirety of who you are.

I remain grateful for how far I have come, intentional about where I am going, and hopeful about the possibilities that lie ahead.

If my journey has taught me anything, it is that becoming is an ongoing process. Every experience offers an opportunity to learn, every challenge presents an opportunity to develop resilience, and every new chapter allows us to discover another dimension of our potential.

My Personal Note

" We do not have to have everything figured out to keep moving forward. We only need the courage to begin, the discipline to remain committed, the faith to keep believing, and the humility to keep learning. Your beginning is not your boundary. Your past is not your limitation, and your career does not have to follow a predetermined script. Give yourself permission to evolve, embrace new possibilities, and become everything you are capable of becoming. "

I am still growing, still learning, and still discovering new ways to make meaningful contributions. And I have learned to appreciate that there is beauty in not having every chapter figured out.

I am still becoming. And I believe that is one of the most beautiful things about this journey.
