Taking Up Space: A Woman's Journey in a Male-Dominated Field

Finding strength in authenticity: A woman's guide to thriving in a male-dominated career while raising a family.

Being a woman in a male-dominated field is not for the faint of heart. The expectations are high, and the pressures can feel even heavier for those of us who are also mothers.

As women, we are often expected to demonstrate the same grit, determination, and resilience as our peers. Yet when motherhood enters the picture, an entirely different set of responsibilities demands our attention. Even with a supportive and involved partner, the mental load and emotional weight of parenting remain. The expectation becomes clear: be an exceptional employee, be an exceptional mother, and somehow still find time to be yourself.

That balancing act is not easy. Through my own experiences, I have learned that authenticity is the key.

I am the same person at work as I am outside of work. I refuse to put on a different mask depending on the environment I'm in. I strive to give my best in every area of my life while maintaining professionalism and staying true to my values and beliefs. I've discovered that when you show up as your authentic self, people connect with you in a much more meaningful way. Authenticity doesn't mean everyone will like you, and that's okay. You are not meant to be everyone's cup of tea.

What matters is being able to look in the mirror at the end of the day and know that you did your best. You gave what you could to your family. You showed up for your job. You honored yourself and your principles. That is enough. For women who sometimes feel like they need to shrink themselves to fit into a room, let me offer this reminder: take up space. Speak up. Share your ideas. Sit at the table. Own your accomplishments. Your voice is just as valuable as anyone else's, and your perspective deserves to be heard. You do not have to make yourself smaller to make others comfortable. At the same time, never underestimate the power of kindness.

In a world that can often reward aggression and competition, kindness remains one of the greatest strengths a person can possess. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. Extend grace when you can. Support those around you. There are already enough cutthroat people in the world. We do not need more of them. What we need are people who lead with integrity, compassion, and authenticity.

So, to every woman navigating a demanding career while raising a family, know this: you do not have to choose between being strong and being kind. You do not have to choose between being professional and being yourself. And you certainly do not have to shrink to fit into spaces where you belong.

Show up authentically. Work hard, love your family fiercely, lead with kindness, and most importantly, take up the space you have earned.
