The Art of Being Delusional Enough to Believe in Your Dreams
Finding Balance Between Authenticity and Adaptation on Your Path to Purpose
Growing up, we are all shaped to fit into what society tells us to be. We are given a gender, a name, a social security number, a birthplace with cultural standards already in place, and sometimes even a religion. In this article, I’d like to explore the idea of finding a new balance within our adopted identities so we can better follow our dreams.
When we take on values that hold deep meaning for us, they can become a significant part of our identity and sometimes limit our lives in unexpected ways — influencing who we marry, which restroom we use, or even what is considered socially acceptable to wear in public. Learning to be flexible with our identity and beliefs while maintaining a growth mindset can benefit our well-being, support us in reaching our dreams, and contribute to a more peaceful balance within society.
One of the most notable signs of intelligence is the ability to change your perspective and recognize that there are often multiple sides to every story. Applying this concept to our daily interactions can strengthen our ability to pursue our dreams.
Being authentically yourself when others question your mindset can sometimes be a sign that you are growing and moving in a meaningful direction. Staying on this path may feel like going against society’s expectations. When everything and everyone seems out of reach, it can sometimes indicate that you are pursuing your dreams rather than simply following social norms.
This is often where growth happens.
Using doubt as fuel and not being afraid to be the unconventional person in the room can be part of believing deeply in your vision. Believe in your ideas and dreams, even when people you admire question them. That is often where leadership begins.
Sometimes society, or even people close to us, may unintentionally hold us back because change creates discomfort. Learning to separate yourself from limiting messages and expectations can be an important step toward growth. This may look like dressing differently, dancing in the street, starting a business, or making quieter internal changes.
For example, you may share a home with someone you are not yet comfortable being fully authentic with, so you adapt while continuing to work toward your goals and future authenticity.
Holding onto your vision can require extra effort when surrounded by negativity or environments that do not align with your aspirations. Sometimes this means participating in day-to-day routines while knowing you are striving toward a higher level of creativity, authenticity, or purpose.
This can feel monotonous for people driven by ambition or dreams. Finding balance between fitting into society when necessary and standing out unapologetically when it matters most can be a healthy approach.
In other words, know when to put on the business suit and when it is time to let your individuality show.
You can either become stagnant within existing systems or contribute to them creatively to inspire positive change.
Positive change can mean challenging limiting standards while pursuing your dreams. Becoming more accepting of differing viewpoints and respectfully listening to and discussing ideas can create greater balance in society.
Unique individuals are often placed into categories or judged because they dress differently, think differently, or express themselves differently. Yet those same individuals may offer valuable perspectives, creativity, and innovation that strengthen society.
At the same time, outward conformity does not necessarily reflect character, integrity, or wisdom. People are often more complex than appearances suggest.
Ultimately, believe in your dreams strongly enough to create your own path, even if it does not follow traditional expectations or move in a straight line.
Growth is not always conventional.
Sometimes the most meaningful journeys are the ones we build ourselves.
