The Leadership Practice We Don’t Talk About: Stewarding Your Energy
Aligning Your Natural Energy Rhythms With Your Schedule to Create Sustainable Vitality and Leadership
As ambitious women, we are exceptionally good at organizing our lives around what needs to get done based on a 24-hour time cycle.
Our calendars fill. Our businesses grow. Our families, relationships, travel, health, and personal commitments compete for our attention. We learn to keep moving and pushing through, slowly becoming more disconnected from our body's intelligence.
But there is one problem with treating every day as if we have the same capacity: We don't.
Women are rhythmic by nature. Our energy naturally rises and falls throughout the day, across the week, through hormonal cycles, and across the seasons of our lives. Yet most of modern productivity culture is built around a linear 24-hour model: wake up, produce, perform, repeat.
We are often expected to make our bodies conform to the schedule rather than designing our schedules in relationship with our bodies. You may have filled your calendar and scheduled time to complete your tasks, but did you consider the energetic cost of each thing on your calendar on a given day, week, or month?
Your Energy Is Information
A lower-energy day isn't necessarily a problem to solve. It may be information about your energetic capacity.
There are days when you naturally feel expansive, social, creative, and ready to initiate. Other days may call you toward focus, completion, reflection, or restoration.
When we learn to recognize these patterns and work with them, we can begin asking a different question: "What kind of energy do I have today, and what deserves it?"
That question can change how you work and lead.
Instead of forcing your most demanding creative work into a low-energy window, you can protect your peak hours for strategic thinking. You can batch meetings and administrative work so you stop creating mental fatigue from bouncing between cognitive functions, which constricts your creativity and mental clarity.
You can create recovery space after periods of high output.
These are small changes—but they compound.
Stop Spending Energy Like It's Unlimited
We think carefully about how we invest our money, yet rarely apply the same consciousness to our energy.
But energy is your most valuable currency.
- Your attention is currency.
- Your time is currency.
- Your creativity is currency.
- Your emotional capacity is currency.
- Your physical vitality is currency.
- Every commitment is an investment.
And when we repeatedly override our body's signals with caffeine, supplements, constant stimulation, or sheer willpower, we may be supporting performance in the short term while ignoring what our system is actually asking for and creating an energy deficit for our future.
Sometimes the message is simply: Enough.
Sustainable vitality isn't about finding better ways to push through.
It's about creating the conditions for your energy to renew itself.
Rhythmic Life Design
My own journey into this work came through years of high-performance corporate leadership, international travel, creativity, and eventually learning what happened when I stopped treating my energy as an unlimited resource. Add to that being a highly sensitive person who is affected by the subtle energy influences around me, especially when most workplace environments are slowly draining your life force rather than supporting it. I learned how to make minor adjustments with a big impact by aligning the environments where you spend your time to support what you need to accomplish in them, too. Everything from the type of lighting, colors, airflow, textures, artwork, etc., subtly impacts your nervous system and energy flow.
Through embodiment, energy work, yoga, nervous-system awareness, and seasonal living, I began experimenting with a different way of organizing my life.
I call it Rhythmic Life Design: the practice of becoming aware of your natural energy patterns and intentionally designing your time, commitments, work, environments, and recovery around them.
You don't have to change your entire life. Start by noticing.
- When are you most creative?
- When do you naturally want connection?
- When do you need solitude?
- What consistently drains you?
- What restores you?
- Where are you spending your highest-quality energy?
Then look at your calendar.
Your calendar may tell you what you have to do. Your energy tells you how—and when—you can do it well.
A Season for Harvest
Autumn offers a beautiful invitation to practice this.
Rather than immediately rushing toward the next goal, pause and notice what your energy has already created.
What are you harvesting from the work, relationships, investments, and choices you've made this year?
And what didn't happen?
Some things weren't possible in this season. Some need more time. Some are ready to be released.
Harvest isn't about proving you did enough. It's about recognizing what your energy created—and choosing consciously where to invest it next.
For women building businesses, leading teams, raising families, creating art, and living full lives, this kind of awareness isn't a luxury.
It is leadership.
You don't need endless energy to create an extraordinary life.
You need a relationship with your energy that allows it to renew, evolve, and flow.
That is the foundation of Rhythmic Life Design.
Your energy is your life force. Steward it accordingly.
