The Leadership Shift That Changed My Career

Three Leadership Shifts That Changed the Way I Lead

Early in my career, I thought leadership meant having the answers.

Move faster. Push harder. Stay closest to the biggest opportunities. Be the person everyone looked to for direction.

That approach worked—until it didn't.

As my scope expanded and I began leading leaders, I realized something uncomfortable: the more dependent the team became on me, the less scalable our success became.

That was the moment I stopped thinking about leadership as performance and started thinking about it as multiplication.

Today, I believe the most influential leaders create environments where people think bigger, decide faster, and operate with more confidence than they thought possible.

Here are three shifts that changed the way I lead.

1. Stop Being the Hero. Build More Heroes.

High performers often become leaders because they know how to execute.

But leadership isn't measured by your output—it's measured by what happens when you're not in the room.

I began asking different questions:

  • Who can own this?
  • What capability are we building?
  • How do I create repeatable success instead of isolated wins?

The strongest teams don't wait for permission. They move with clarity.

2. Trade Certainty for Curiosity.

Some of the best outcomes in my career started with curiosity instead of certainty.

I learned that the goal isn't to have all the answers. The goal is to create enough clarity, alignment, and conviction for people to move forward confidently together.

Questions became more powerful than answers:

  • What are we assuming?
  • What problem are we actually solving?
  • What would have to be true for this to work?

Curiosity creates better strategy, stronger alignment, and better decisions.

3. Invest in Trust Before You Need It.

Relationships compound.

Some of the strongest partnerships are forged during moments of pressure—critical decisions, unexpected setbacks, ambitious goals, or periods of change. Those moments often reveal character, accelerate alignment, and deepen trust.

But pressure feels different when trust already exists.

When relationships have been built over time, difficult conversations become more productive. Assumptions are replaced with context. Feedback is received with less defensiveness. Teams move faster because intent is trusted, and energy stays focused on solving the problem rather than protecting positions.

Trust doesn't eliminate tension—it makes tension more constructive.

That's why investing early matters:

  • Following through consistently
  • Having difficult conversations before they become difficult situations
  • Creating transparency, especially when the stakes are high
  • Aligning around outcomes, not positions

When pressure arrives—and it always does—strong relationships don't remove the challenge. They make it easier to navigate together.

Influence isn't title-driven. It's trust-driven.

The leaders who create the greatest impact aren't always the loudest, most visible, or most accomplished individually.

They're the ones who leave people more capable than they found them.

That's the kind of leadership I continue striving toward.
