The Power of Saying Yes to Yourself

How saying yes to the things that scare us leads to becoming the person we're meant to be.

The Power of Saying Yes to Yourself

Looking back, I can see that the biggest changes in my life didn't happen all at once. They happened quietly, one decision at a time.

Saying yes to a new job. Saying yes to a leadership role that challenged me. Saying yes to interviewing people while working for a magazine, even though it pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. Saying yes to posting videos online without knowing how people would respond. And yes... even wearing a dress after years of telling myself, "I'm just not a dress person."

None of those moments changed my life overnight. But together, they changed me.

If I Keep Waiting Until I Feel Ready

That journey didn't begin on my 50th birthday. It started a few years earlier, in my late 40s. There wasn't a life-changing event or a dramatic turning point. It was simply a feeling. As 50 drew closer, I became more aware that time wasn't slowing down. And I found myself asking a question I had never really asked before:

If I keep waiting until I feel ready, how many opportunities will I miss?

That question stayed with me. I didn't know it then, but it would quietly change the way I approached every opportunity that came afterward.

Confidence Was Never Going to Arrive First

For much of my career, I accepted opportunities that stretched me, but I often carried more self-doubt than confidence. I questioned whether I was ready, whether I knew enough, and whether I could really do the job.

Looking back, I realize I spent far too much time waiting to feel confident, when confidence was never going to arrive first. It came because I was willing to begin.

Every new opportunity taught me something. Every challenge showed me I was more capable than I had believed, and every uncomfortable experience helped me trust myself a little more.

Looking back, I can see the pattern: the opportunities that shaped me the most were almost always the ones that scared me first.

I Wore the Dress

The same thing happened in my personal life.

For years, I didn't wear dresses. It simply wasn't how I saw myself. It had become part of the story I told myself about who I was.

Then one day, I thought, Why not?

I wore the dress.

It wasn't really about the dress. It was about realizing I didn't have to keep living by rules I had written for myself years earlier. I could change my mind. I could try something different. I could keep growing.

A Quiet Shift

As I moved into my 50s, I noticed another quiet shift.

I still wondered from time to time what people might think of me, but those thoughts no longer stopped me from doing something that excited or challenged me. Instead of wondering whether people would like what I was doing, I started wondering what I might miss if I didn't even try.

That simple shift in perspective gave me more freedom than I ever expected.

I've learned that courage doesn't always look extraordinary. Sometimes it looks like accepting an opportunity before you feel completely qualified. Introducing yourself to someone you've always admired. Sharing your ideas. Posting the videos. Wearing the dress. Choosing growth, even when staying the same feels easier.

One decision at a time, those moments shaped a more authentic version of me. Looking back, I realize that every time I said yes to something that scared me, I discovered I was capable of more than I had imagined.

I've Stopped Waiting for Fear to Disappear

Today, what matters most isn't that I've reached my 50s. It's that I've stopped waiting for fear to disappear before moving forward.

I'm still learning. I'm still growing. I'm still saying yes to opportunities that make me a little nervous. And I hope I always will.

When I look back on my life someday, I don't think I'll remember the moments when I played it safe. I'll remember the conversations that challenged me. The opportunities that stretched me. The chances I took on myself. The videos I almost didn't post. The dress I almost didn't wear.

Because those weren't just moments when I stepped outside my comfort zone. They were the moments that reminded me of who I was capable of becoming.

If there's one thing my late 40s and 50s have taught me, it's this:

The most meaningful opportunities in life rarely arrive after we feel ready. More often, they are the very experiences that help us become ready.
