The Smartest People I Know Are Still Stuck.

Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn't Enough—And What Actually Heals It

The Smartest People I Know Are Still Stuck.

I used to think that if I could just understand my trauma well enough, it would lose its grip on me.

I was wrong.

For years, I did what intelligent, self-aware women do. I read everything. I sat in therapy. I journaled until my hand ached. I could trace every pattern back to its root, name every wound with startling clarity, and explain the psychology of my own behaviour with the kind of precision that impressed fellow coaches.

And still—still—I would find myself in a familiar moment, showing up in a way I genuinely didn't want to. Making myself small when I meant to stand tall. Overgiving when I needed to hold a boundary. Shutting down when I most wanted to shine.

It was maddening.

Because I knew. I knew exactly why. I could see the thread running from my past straight into the present moment. And yet knowing changed exactly nothing.

Your Body Didn't Get the Memo

What I didn't understand then—and what took me years to finally grasp—is that trauma doesn't live in your mind.

It lives in your body.

And your body doesn't speak the language of insight.

No matter how sophisticated your understanding, your nervous system is operating from a completely different set of instructions—instructions that were written long before you had the words for any of it. Long before you could reflect, analyse, or make meaning.

Your body learned, at some point, that certain situations weren't safe. And it has been protecting you from those situations ever since—faithfully, automatically, and completely regardless of what your brilliant mind now knows to be true.

This is not a failure of intelligence.

This is biology doing exactly what biology does.

The Chapter I Couldn't Write

Very recently, there was one chapter in my memoir, The Woman I Had to Find, that I simply couldn't write. Every time I tried, something in me stopped—like a door softly closing.

I knew what it was about. I understood it. I had processed it—or so I believed. But every time I sat down and opened the manuscript, something in me went quiet. It wasn't writer's block in the creative sense. It was something older than that. A stillness that felt more like shutdown.

It wasn't until I worked with that part of me somatically—until I let my body complete what it had been holding for years—that the words finally came. They didn't trickle. They poured.

The story hadn't changed.

I had.

What Root-Cause Healing Actually Does

This is what root-cause healing does that intellectual understanding alone cannot.

It goes beneath the narrative. Beneath the insight. Beneath even the most exquisitely articulated self-awareness—and works directly with what the body has been quietly carrying all along.

And here is what I want every high-achieving, deeply self-aware woman to hear:

The fact that you still show up in ways you don't want to is not evidence that you haven't worked hard enough.

It's evidence that you've been using the wrong tool.

The Shift That Changes Everything

Your intelligence got you here. It helped you survive, make sense of things, and build something meaningful from complexity and lived experience. That is no small thing.

But healing asks for something different. It asks you to drop below the mind and into the body. To stop explaining the wound and start completing it.

That shift—from understanding to embodied healing—is the one that changes everything.

Not because it makes you smarter about your trauma.

Because it finally makes it safe enough for your nervous system to let it go.

If this resonated, I explore these ideas more deeply in my practice, specifically through my new Beneath the Belief container. Here's the link if you're interested.
