The Strength of Self-Awareness in Leadership

Recognizing and leveraging the strengths of others is the cornerstone of effective leadership.

The Strength of Self-Awareness in Leadership

Leadership Is About Recognizing Strengths—Not Doing It All

One of the most important lessons in leadership is not learning how to lead every aspect of the work. It is learning where your strengths lie—and where the strengths of others can elevate the work even further.

Recently, I worked with colleagues to launch the DPAS Specialist Steering Committee, beginning a multi-year effort to revise the Delaware specialist evaluation system. This work brings together educators and leaders to examine how specialists are supported and evaluated, with the ultimate goal of strengthening systems that support student learning.

As we prepared for our first session, we reviewed the agenda and discussed who would lead each component of the conversation. One portion involved designing and facilitating discussion protocols.

As we talked it through, I was reminded of something about my own leadership style.

Much of my work naturally centers on analyzing systems, examining details, and ensuring clarity and alignment. I focus on how complex pieces fit together and how processes can support meaningful professional growth.

Facilitating real-time discussions, however—guiding dialogue and navigating the flow of conversation—is an area where my colleague’s strengths clearly shine.

So I said something simple:

“This is your strength. Would you take the lead on this part?”

And she did.

Later that evening, I revisited a DISC and Motivators report I had completed previously. It described a leadership style that often spends significant time thinking, analyzing, and preparing before speaking or acting. Reading it again reinforced an important lesson:

Strong leadership is not about doing everything ourselves.

For many years, I believed leadership meant being able to handle every part of the work well. Over time, I have come to understand something different: leadership is grounded in self-awareness—knowing where our strengths naturally live, recognizing where others bring complementary expertise, and creating space for those strengths to lead.

This perspective connects to what I describe as a Warrior mindset. For me, it’s not about pushing harder or asserting control. It reflects discipline, humility, and continuous learning. It requires the willingness to reflect honestly, acknowledge where others bring skills we may not possess, and remain open to growth.

In leadership, self-awareness is one of our most powerful tools. Some leaders bring clarity through thoughtful analysis. Some create stability and trust within teams. Others guide conversations that draw out the thinking of the group. Effective leadership environments recognize that these strengths are different but equally valuable.

The moment I shared with my colleague was small, yet it reinforced a powerful truth:

Leadership is not defined by doing everything ourselves. It is defined by how we work together to move the work forward.

I am deeply appreciative of colleagues whose strengths complement my own and strengthen the work we do together.
