The "Value" of Value Travel
Unlock the Hidden Rewards of United Airlines' MileagePlus Program and Transform Your Travel Experience
So many people, especially Westerners, do not realize the true value of airline loyalty programs. Hotel loyalty programs offer next to nothing by comparison, but airline loyalty programs—particularly those from legacy carriers—can be incredibly rewarding. I have to specifically mention United Airlines here, as their miles never expire.
United offers PlusPoints beginning at the Gold loyalty level and above. These PlusPoints can be used to upgrade United flights (and, conditionally, Star Alliance partner flights) at a cost of roughly 20 to 60 PlusPoints per upgrade or flight. At the Gold level you’re awarded 80 PlusPoints each year; at Platinum you receive 120; and at 1K, United’s highest public tier, you receive 260 PlusPoints—added to whatever balance you already have. The loyalty tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum, 1K, and Global Services) are also fairly attainable for frequent travelers.
MileagePlus, United’s loyalty program, is free to join, and their mobile app is consistently rated as one of the best airline apps in the world. Even more importantly, when you sign up for one of their credit cards—such as the United Explorer Card as a good starting option, or the QUEST Card for even greater value—every purchase earns miles that contribute toward status. Beginning in 2026, the QUEST Card becomes even more advantageous, earning PlusPoints, PQPs, and miles with everyday spending. In many cases, passive spending alone can help travelers reach Silver status by year’s end.
Airline loyalty is more than a perk; it can save you money, enhance convenience, and ensure you travel with greater comfort and ease.
