Unconventional Pathways: How "Operational Empathy" Defines High-Impact Executive Leadership
From CNA to Executive: How Every Role I've Worn Has Shaped My Leadership Philosophy
Looking back over my journey today, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for every single step along the way.
Throughout my career, people have often told me, "Renita, you wear a lot of hats!" And it’s true. I have always been driven by deep curiosity and a genuine hunger to learn new things, step into complex environments, and master the work. You could call me a daredevil—just without the "dare" or the "devil"!
A traditional résumé lists titles, metrics, and executive strategies. But a document alone can never fully capture the grit, heavy responsibility, and critical knowledge that comes with every role you step into.
My very first and most important hat was being a mother. That’s where unconditional care, patience, and fierce protection begin.
In healthcare, starting on the floor as a CNA meant direct patient care—learning empathy, quick instincts, and real human connection at the bedside before ever stepping into HR leadership.
In aviation, stepping up as a ramp supervisor meant working in high-hazard environments—towing aircraft, marshalling planes, passing high-stakes safety exams, and running security sweeps where absolute precision and vigilance were paramount.
In retail and multi-site logistics, it meant managing complex operations, leading cross-functional teams through major site restructures, and holding the line on compliance.
And that is still just a snapshot of the many hats I've worn. Truthfully, I feel like I still wear them all.
Every single role brought serious accountability. None of them were just "jobs"—they were masterclasses in operational discipline, human behavior, and leadership under pressure.
When I sit in executive boardrooms today advising C-suite leaders and making hard organizational decisions, I don't lead from an ivory tower. I lead with what I call Operational Empathy—the genuine perspective of someone who has stood in those shoes, done the work, and holds that lived experience close.
To every woman navigating a non-traditional career path: never discount the journey. Every hat you wear builds the wisdom, courage, and credibility you carry into your next chapter.
True leadership isn't about where you started—it’s about how deeply you understand the people who power the business every single day.
