Why I Review Travel (as a woman)
Women need a voice in travel too! Men have theirs, we need ours.
Why Do I Review Travel?
I get this question quite often. To keep it brief (I covered part of this in depth in my very first article here), there are very few female-oriented travel reviewers, vloggers, concierges, or agents—less than 2%, in fact.
And I don’t simply review travel.
Our team—and yours truly—reviews all modes of transit, including rail, air, and cruise, as well as hotels. We also place strong emphasis on travel education. Very few organizations in the United States operate with this focus and perspective.
If you search video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, you’ll notice that nearly all aviation reviewers are male. That’s not inherently a problem—but women need a voice. More importantly, women need a voice that speaks specifically to their needs when traveling internationally.
There are countries where men can travel freely and without a second thought that, while legally accessible to women, may be culturally restrictive or challenging for solo female travelers. The same can be true for certain cities.
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and Medina are all extraordinary cities. However, safety and comfort can depend heavily on circumstances. In some regions, solo female travelers may face cultural expectations that differ significantly from those experienced by men. Visitors—especially women—must follow local customs and dress codes where applicable.
Yes, in 2021, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) repealed certain so-called “purity laws.” However, cultural norms and expectations do not change overnight.
Additionally, some airlines based in the Middle East—despite being among the best in the world—may enforce cultural standards more strictly when approaching regional airspace. It’s important to understand these nuances. Yet most aggregated travel metrics and reviews are driven largely by male travelers, which can leave important perspectives underrepresented.
That’s why we do what we do.
At Brooke In The Air Travel, our mission is to inform and guide women toward cities and countries where they can travel safely and confidently. We focus on education—teaching female travelers how to navigate cultural expectations, travel intelligently, and transition from being tourists to becoming true global citizens.
