Lessons Learned: Stay Vigilant, Alert, and Responsive, Because Nothing Is Guaranteed
I was recently asked the question, "What's one lesson you learned the hard way?"
I thought about it for a long time, struggling to identify a lesson I had learned the hard way because I was raised to rely on my discernment, my family, and my village to help me navigate life and the choices I would make.
From an early age, I learned to approach life with both an open mind and an open heart. I've experienced moments of tremendous joy as well as profound hardship, but I always knew I never had to face those experiences alone. The support of the people in my life gave me the strength, resilience, and flexibility to draw upon my resources and navigate whatever challenges came my way.
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks—a tsunami of emotions.
The life experience that has impacted every fiber of my being is the realization that women, children, and especially people of color are under increasing attack in this new world order. Across our current ideological landscape, there are open efforts to roll back and dismantle much of the progress that women and the Civil Rights Movement fought so hard to achieve in advancing equality, opportunity, and human dignity.
It has forced me to confront a difficult truth: the progress we have made cannot be taken for granted.
Too often, it feels as though the security of those hard-earned gains is far more fragile than many of us believed. Rights, opportunities, and recognition require continual protection, advocacy, and vigilance.
I have been writing my blog, Women of Compassionate Spirits, for some time now. I believe I was given a spiritual calling to encourage women to take action.
Over time, I have come to realize that our position within historically male-dominated systems remains out of balance. Yet I also believe that women—and people of color—bring qualities that strengthen humanity: inclusion, tenacity, courage, justice, creativity, intuition, and spiritual insight.
As women, we also carry the extraordinary symbolism of the womb—the place of creation. It represents not only the creation of life, but the capacity to nurture ideas, cultivate innovation, restore balance, and inspire the brilliance that moves humanity forward.
That understanding has deepened my commitment to advocating for children and families while expanding my work to serve as an agent of change for women and for people of color, including those whose experiences mirror my own.
Learning that nearly 400,000 Black women lost positions of authority during the first three months of 2026 brought me back to the emotions I experienced during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
We are not going back.
Each of us is an influential woman within our own sphere of influence. Individually, we create change. Collectively, we have the power to help birth a world in which our children do more than survive—they thrive.
As we continue advocating for meaningful change, we must ensure that the values we fight for become firmly embedded in our laws, our public policies, our institutions, and the fabric of our shared humanity.
