World's Best Literary Hotels - 2026

Discover the World's Most Enchanting Literary Retreats for Book Lovers

Welcome back, dearest value-travelers!

Reading is one of my passions, and I hope it is a love of yours, too. There is nothing better than grabbing an actual book off the shelf and browsing, or curling up in a comfy chair with your favorite drink in hand and getting lost in the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, René Descartes, Tacitus, Homer, John Milton, or even William Shakespeare, just to name a few. I truly have an affinity for the classics. I admit, I even spent my childhood in my parents' bookstore and had my first job there as a clerk after school. However, true book lovers span the generations and innumerable genres.

The travel industry has indeed taken note of this love of literature. In collaboration with Condé Nast Traveler, we present the best literary-oriented hotels!

These hotels span the world but are largely concentrated in Europe and a few in North America. The bookish hotels on this list understand the literary pleasure and turn reading into an essential part of the stay. Some have storied histories, with famous authors having checked in as guests; others offer wonderfully over-the-top touches, from private libraries and book-filled suites to partnerships with local bookstores showcasing authors big and small.

Let's open the cover and turn the page! Pun intended. Here we go!

Schloss Elmau

Location: Krün, Germany

Tucked into the Bavarian Alps, Schloss Elmau is a hotel for people who like their escapes to feed the mind as much as the body. The sprawling retreat has its own bookstore (called Food for Thought), dedicated library spaces, and a cultural calendar that includes author readings, literary festivals, political debates, and book presentations alongside its renowned concerts.

The property is split into two main areas: the original Hideaway building, which features the Silentium Library and its outdoor terrace with mountain views, and the newer Retreat building, which houses the cozy Library Lounge and Bar. With 30 to 40 book presentations and political debates held each year, literature is part of the entire experience if you so choose-just dip in between hikes, spa sessions, and airy Alpine afternoons.

Library Hotel by Library Hotel Collection

Location: New York City (Manhattan), New York, USA

For a hotel that takes its bookish identity seriously, Library Hotel is almost comically on theme in the best possible way. The Dewey Decimal System is the blueprint for the stay: each of the 10 guest-room floors corresponds to a major category of knowledge, while the 60 rooms each focus on a specific subject, with books and artwork to match.

Altogether, the hotel has more than 6,000 books, with even more to browse in the 24-hour Reading Room, where coffee, tea, snacks, and hundreds of titles invite you to linger. And with the New York Public Library just steps away, the entire experience feels wonderfully literary. (Not to mention, it's a more cost-friendly option compared to other hotels in the Midtown area-which is a nice surprise!)

GoldenEye Hotel

Location: Oracabessa Bay, Jamaica

GoldenEye is the rare hotel where the setting and the story are almost impossible to separate. Ian Fleming first came to Jamaica during World War II, returning in 1946 to build a seaside retreat in Oracabessa Bay, naming it after a wartime operation. It was here that he wrote all 14 James Bond novels, starting with Casino Royale, often retreating to his bedroom to work with the shutters closed against the very lush Caribbean scenery he found so distracting.

Today, the original Fleming Villa remains part of the resort, with his writing desk still in place. For book lovers, there's a poetic thrill to reading Bond here-with the sea, the gardens, and the same tropical landscape that once sat just outside Fleming's window.

Graduate by Hilton, Princeton

Location: Princeton, New Jersey, USA

The Graduate Hotel by Hilton, Princeton, knows exactly what kind of fantasy it is selling: the dreamy, slightly nostalgic version of college where you spend an afternoon wandering through stacks instead of rushing to class. The hotel's lobby is designed like an old-school campus library, with towering bookshelves, vintage academic touches, leather seating, and plenty of places to curl up with a book.

Set in a restored 1918 building just off Princeton's Ivy League campus, it puts you within easy reach of the university's formidable library system, including Firestone Library, whose collections stretch across millions of books and rare materials. Come for the collegiate atmosphere, then make a pilgrimage to the stacks-the perfect pairing for anyone who still gets a little thrill from a library card.

Hotel Lilien

Location: Tannersville, New York, USA

Hotel Lilien might just be one of the most alluring places to cozy up by the fire and open up a book. Built in the 1890s by the Lilienthal family, the Victorian estate has stood for more than a century and today is home to boutique Hotel Lilien, which mixes the charm of its historic roots with modern touches for travelers of today.

The property's library is its centerpiece, lined with vintage and antique volumes on the Catskills, local flora and fauna, design, and decor. Its most treasured work is a first edition of Dear Remembered World, the memoir of Meta Lilienthal, fervent suffragette and daughter of the estate's original owners. The property has also partnered with the beloved Brooklyn bookstore Books Are Magic to offer guests a curated variety of contemporary titles, ranging from literary fiction to thought-provoking nonfiction, all available to enjoy on-property.

The Betsy, South Beach

Location: Miami, Florida, USA

Located on Ocean Drive, The Betsy has built an unusually deep literary life into its glamorous South Beach setting. Every guest room has its own collection of books, while the 24-hour library is a more immersive hideaway, lined with shelves and filled with titles spanning poetry, jazz, and beyond.

The hotel's Writer's Room, opened in 2012, has welcomed more than 1,500 working writers and creatives for residencies, and its literary programming continues with author talks and events in partnership with local bookstore Books & Books. Add in the Poetry Rail-a permanent installation of poetry by writers connected to Miami-and you'll find that The Betsy isn't simply a hotel with books, but a place genuinely devoted to the written word.

Hotel Monteleone

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

In New Orleans's French Quarter, Hotel Monteleone has been giving writers plenty to work with since 1886. William Faulkner honeymooned here and wrote The Sound and the Fury during his stay; Tennessee Williams wrote The Rose Tattoo on-site, and Ernest Hemingway featured the hotel in his short story "The Night Before Battle." Truman Capote was such a regular at the rotating Carousel Bar that he famously joked he'd been born there (his mother did go into labor at the hotel, but he was actually born at Touro Infirmary).

Today, the hotel remains a National Literary Landmark, with suites honoring Faulkner, Williams, Hemingway, and Eudora Welty.

Ambassade Hotel

Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

If there's a hotel that can credibly call itself a writers' hotel, it's Amsterdam's Ambassade. Spread across 16 historic canal houses, the property has hosted an extraordinary roster of authors since 1986-including Umberto Eco, Salman Rushdie, Paul Auster, Isabel Allende, and Jonathan Safran Foer-all of whom have been invited to sign a copy of their latest book and leave a note in the hotel's guestbook.

The result is the Library Bar's collection of more than 5,000 signed books, representing authors from across 76 countries. Pull up a chair among them for a cappuccino or cocktail, and you're surrounded not just by the city's canals and best books, but by a little piece of literary history.

Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa

Location: Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands)

The Kimpton Seafire Resort and Spa brings an upscale yet lighthearted energy to Grand Cayman's famous Seven Mile Beach. While the resort offers stunning oceanfront views and sun-drenched terraces, you'll have to go to the lobby to find the most unique haven for book lovers: Library by the Sea.

There's something delightfully unlibrary-like about this lounge, where you're welcome to pick a book of your choice and are encouraged to order a drink, with cocktails inspired by celebrated works of fiction and a collection of vintage spirits displayed alongside books. The design in the library is all sand, sea, vintage bottles, and soft seating, with a traditional Caymanian catboat suspended overhead.

Le Pavillon des Lettres Hotel

Location: Paris, France

This intimate little 26-room hotel in the 8th arrondissement dedicates each room to a different letter of the alphabet and a celebrated writer, from Andersen and Baudelaire to Shakespeare and Zola, with excerpts from their works woven into the rooms. The book theme carries into the lounge, where guests can settle in with a selection of tomes and even room service, or should I say book service, which includes a menu of titles ranging from Mrs. Dalloway to Candide, alongside art and fashion books. It's a charmingly immersive way to let literature shape your Paris stay, and slightly more affordable than your average hotel in the area.

And lastly…

The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Location: Portland, Oregon, USA

The Nines makes a compelling case for checking in and barely leaving. Set inside Portland's historic Meier & Frank building, the art-filled hotel has its own library, created in partnership with the iconic Powell's City of Books and stocked with more than 3,000 titles to borrow during your stay. It's a handsome, cozy retreat with floor-to-ceiling shelves, leather seating, a billiards table, and local artwork, including pieces by filmmaker Gus Van Sant. And when you finally tear yourself away, Powell's-with options both used and new-is just a short walk down the street, so there's really no excuse not to leave with another book in your bag.

Any one of these hotels will be sure to have the literary lover in you knocking on your heart's walls. Book your itinerary (pun intended) with Brooke In The Air Travel at brookeintheairtravel.net!
