Her Story

About Angela

I currently run a trucking company and a brokerage company, handling every aspect of the business from front to back as the sole operator. Before this, I was working for a milk company where we transported eggs from Ohio to Jersey and Ohio to PA. I wasn't happy working weekends and wanted something more flexible that would allow me to be with my kids when they were home, which led me to start looking for something else. Now I do everything - dispatching, billing, reaching out to new customers - I'm the only person running everything here. What makes me happiest is the customer service aspect, communicating with my customers, carriers, and drivers. I take them all personally, they mean everything to me. My most notable professional achievement is being able to run the business by myself, though it requires self-sacrifice. I don't have a backup, so even on vacation or when I had a heart attack a year ago, I was still working. Currently I work from home with my own office setup, and work goes with me wherever I go. If my drivers call at midnight or 2 o'clock in the morning with a breakdown or load issue, I still have to answer that call. It's hard for me to step away and make a clear cutoff time, even though I know I should prioritize my family. But I love what I do, and while I'm still here, I don't want to pass the reins to anybody else.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Just take it one day at a time. I know that sounds cheesy and simple, but literally, if you try to take on more than what you can handle, it's gonna get the best of ya. Just take it one day at a time, because regardless of the situation, if you're not there to do it, somebody else will be. Honestly, I feel that you have to love what you do, and put your whole heart into it. And that makes a world of difference.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Initially, it's an industry that's not built for women. And I feel that being a woman in this industry, you've got to be strong and know what you're doing, because sometimes you feel like you can be walked all over. So, first and foremost, as long as you take the time and figure out the industry, and actually learn what you're doing, be honest and trustworthy, everything else will fall into place. A lot of my customers gave testimonials about me and how I handle things, and it really touched me to know that I'm seen being a woman in this industry. Not that I make an impact on them, but that I'm seen being a woman in this industry.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being the one person in the business that I run doing everything from front to back, being a woman in the industry, and prioritizing work and family - everything. I'm the type of person that I work till the job's done, so it's hard for me to look at the clock and know that 4 o'clock I'm done whenever I still have work that can be done versus walking away from it and actually going and attending to my family, to my kids, to the household. It's hard for me to step away, and especially know that I feel that I'm good at something, to put something else ahead of that, even though it's my family. To make a clear cutoff time, I guess, would be the hardest thing for me. Even whenever I'm done in the office at 4 o'clock, if my drivers are calling at 6 o'clock, or at midnight, or at 2 o'clock in the morning, I still have to answer that call. Being in dispatching, trucking itself, if there's a breakdown, if there's an issue with a load, if there's anything going on, you still have to answer that call.
