Anita Shimirimana, MBA, LALFA is a healthcare and business leader based in Nashville, Tennessee, with extensive experience in non-medical home care and supportive services. She immigrated to the United States from Burundi after graduating high school and initially pursued a career in healthcare by completing CNA training. Her early hands-on experience in assisted living and home care sparked a long-term commitment to serving vulnerable populations, particularly older adults and individuals requiring daily living assistance.

In 2016, after facing challenges securing employment due to limited experience and language barriers, she founded Able Helpers Home Care. What began as a small operation grew into a multi-service agency providing non-medical home care across Middle and East Tennessee. Under her leadership, the organization expanded to include services such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, personal care assistance (including bathing, dressing, and transfers), and companionship. She is deeply involved in operations, personally handling client intake, assessments, and ongoing service evaluations to ensure care plans reflect client needs and feedback.

Alongside building her business, Anita continued advancing her education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration and an MBA in Management and Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University, and is completing a Doctorate in Healthcare Administration. She also holds leadership roles across related organizations, including Able Helpers Transportation and Christ Home Care. Her approach emphasizes integrity, direct client engagement, and continuous improvement based on client feedback. She is particularly proud of growing her agency from the ground up into a multi-million-dollar operation while maintaining a strong focus on personalized, community-centered care.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being honest when we communicate with clients. As owner and administrator, I meet with all my clients. I know all my clients. I go out there, meet with them, ask what their goals are, what they want, and get the feedback from the agency, and I'm able to change based on my client feedback. I think that's what makes us so successful. Going from starting a business from zero to two million is not easy, especially with no background in any kind of field. So listening to my clients and using that feedback to improve the service, I think that's what helped me most to be more successful. Also, going back to school and getting more knowledge and keeping improving has been key.
