Her Story

About Annie

My story is a little unique. I'm actually from the private sector in Vietnam, where I worked for multinational companies like Samsung and Solar. I came to the United States about 7 years ago and got into a doctoral program in public administration. During this time, I became really passionate about learning how local governments can utilize AI effectively and responsibly. That's the topic I research and present at different conferences. When I worked in the private sector, I could see innovation happening very fast, but when I studied public administration, I could see how innovation in local government is very slow. I think the United States can do better with that. That's why I study it, especially when generative AI came out. We see this technology advancing faster than any previous technology before. When ChatGPT came out, it reached 100 million users in only 2 weeks. I can see that investment and publication about AI is increasing significantly, but in government it's very, very low in the United States. That's why I really think this is something I can contribute to the field. I work in small business administration as my daily job as a business consultant, where I also apply AI consulting for small business owners. In the nighttime and on weekends, I do my dissertation and research. I'm going to defend my dissertation next month and become a doctor in this field. I dedicate all my time to work and studying, and of course I balance it with exercise.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I truly believe in grit. For anyone who doesn't have a seat at the table, like me, to earn our place in a room that's not built for us in mind, I think we need to really have that grit to overcome all the obstacles, whether it's a language barrier because I come from another country, cultural differences, or being a minority and being underestimated. When you have that grit, the consistency of hard work, showing up every day whether you like it or not, just being consistent and improving, and stepping out of your comfort zone to go into the field that challenges you, that you feel uncomfortable, I think that's when we grow the most. That is a key for us to be successful and to be influential in the field.
