Her Story

About Barbara

I've been in education for 26 years now, and I currently work as an assistant to the associate dean at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Department of Osteopathic Engagement and Community Practice. My role is multifaceted - I not only support my associate dean, but I also coordinate the Dr. William G. Anderson Lecture Series, Slavery to Freedom, an event that's been around as long as I have at the university. For the last 20 or 21 years, it's been my responsibility, along with my supervisor's, to put this together, and it's now a university-wide program. I also assist our Voice Committee, which is a diversity committee, and help them with events. For our student orientation, we put together a DEI panel, and we also organize a DEI reception to get students engaged and let them know they belong here. This year, my supervisor and I received the MSU Black Alumni and Administrators Influential Leader Award, which was a tremendous honor. We're a dynamic duo - it's only a two-person office, but we get a lot done. I'm also a board member of the Clerical Technical Union. Beyond my work at MSU, I serve as a church secretary, helping not only my local church but the jurisdiction as well, since my pastor is the bishop. I handle graphics and secretarial work for them.

Ten minutes with Barbara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I view negativity as something to overcome. I also lost my mom and attorney about 3 years ago, and that was part of my inspiration. So I'd say find your inspiration, whatever it is that makes you tick, that drives you and motivates you, and try to overcome it. Whatever challenges you face, use them as fuel. For me, it's been about turning difficult experiences into motivation and finding what pushes me forward.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stand strong in your beliefs. There's a lot of negativity out there, and a lot is changing in higher education, so you just have to be strong and have the will to overcome. Don't let the challenges or negativity deter you. Stay grounded in what you believe in and maintain the strength to push through whatever obstacles come your way.
