Her Story
About Beth
Acton is a professional who has worn many hats over her working years. Directly out of college, as a business marketing major from University of Delaware, she worked as a radio advertising executive. Next she moved on to retail sales, and then credit account representative for the U.S. Army while overseas. After working as an administrative assistant to a financial advisor, Acton moved into a career with T. Rowe Price as an account representative/ letter writer (with a Series 6, 63 and 7 certification). Later, she was one of the first technical support professionals helping customers when T. Rowe Price opened a customer use website. From 2002-2009, Acton decided to be an at-home parent, caring for two small children. In order to continue being there for her children, became a teacher with Anne Arundel County, first as a substitute, then long-term sub, and finally full-time permanent substitute teacher. As her children reached their teens, she longed for the corporate environment again. Acton applied to Rockwell Collins, now Collins Aerospace owned by Raytheon. Thanks to some connections, she was called in for an interview. (Not an easy feat in your 40's). Acton was hired as an administrative professional and with networking over time was able to procure her current position in engineering as a configuration manager. She has been with the company for 10 years and continues in her studies to improve, with software engineering classes at UMBC, and configuration management courses with CMPIC.
Acton has been a wife to Christopher for almost 30 years, and has two children; a daughter - Amelia (24), and son - Andy (21). In addition to the professional jobs mentioned above, she has worked as Starbucks barista, Uber and Lyft driver, waitress, and retail salesperson. Acton is active in her local church and community theater, and has an IMDB page for the one movie she starred in. She also loves to hike and visit the beach. Her love of God and family keeps her happy.

Ten minutes with Beth
01What do you attribute your success to?
I am someone who doesn't allow myself to be put in a box. If I am interested in a job, I will go for it. If I need to learn to get there, I will take classes or self study. If networking helps, I meet people and learn about their jobs. Being a helpful, knowledgeable person that people come to with questions has helped open doors for me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Have confidence. Never stop learning. Keep up with the changes in technology. Remember who you are and what you deserve.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Technology changes, modernization vs. legacy. It is hard to get people to move on to new and better ways to do things.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Love God and Love Your Neighbor. These values will help in both work and personal life. I am blessed to be where I am today. Thank you to God for giving me the strength and courage to get where I am today.
