01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the leaders I met at the beginning of my journey in Accounting and Finance, when I was just an office clerk right out of high school. I was the one who accepted the challenge to learn to do someone else's work while they were out of the office, I didn't shy away from the challenge. That's how you learn and grow and keep promoting up to the next level in your field. I attributed my success in the system converting to learning everyone's job early on in my career, and it became very easy for me to connect the dots, and communicate that information to the system administrators, to provide the best product for the client.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I ever received from a leader is love what you do, see the value in the service you're providing, and do it with honesty, integrity and accuracy. The daily, weekly or monthly reports you generate create a financial blueprint for the company for that day, that week or that month. Key decisions are made based on the information provided, it's very important that you've made your best effort to ensure the information is correct.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I would give a young women entering the Accounting and Finance Industry, never stop learning. School never ends, enrolling in certification course, you’ll be surprised where it will take you in your career, and how the knowledge comes full circle. Most importantly, love what you do, see the value, take pride, and be confident that the information you are providing was accurate at the time report was ran.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in the Accounting and Finance field right not are Manual processes and repetitive tasks are a thing of the pass (e.g., reconciliations, data entry) and are being disrupted by AI and automation tools Traditional accounting workflows need reengineering, to keep up with current events and change. Financial data is a prime target for cyberattacks. Accountants increasingly touch systems with sensitive PII and financial details, which is a big risk for a lot of companies. The expectation for real-time reporting pushes firms to rethink batch reporting cycles.
The biggest opportunities in the Accounting and Finance field right now are Skills in tools like QuickBooks Online, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Pro are increasingly valuable just to name a few. Financial reporting is evolving into predictive and advisory roles. Professionals with knowledge of IT risk controls and fraud detection are in demand. Firms can leverage secure
cloud infrastructure and continuous monitoring. Upskilling through continuous learning, certifications and technology training enhances career growth.Accountants can build expertise in sustainability accounting environmental impact metrics, and integrated reporting.
While there are so many challenges that those that are joining the Accounting and Finance Industries are facing, the opportunities are endless. Challenge yourself and grow to the next level. I remember when our only concern was to get out of the green screen, yes, I'm aging myself, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that come to mind in my professional and personal life are
