Her Story

About Chinaza

I've been working in digital marketing for almost 12 years, with the last 6 years focused specifically on affiliate marketing. What drew me to affiliate marketing was that I realized digital marketing was a lot more about working with algorithms and always having to mitigate the human experience with how a computer would read it. That never really sat right with me. Affiliate marketing was a lot more about relationship management and really being able to find places that people get their recommendations, and being able to have those conversations. I'm someone that really loves communicating, and I really don't like having to always be up against the computer deciding that whatever ad I created didn't work out. I like the nuanced idea of working with humans and connecting, and being able to help consumers find their right products. I stay very open to all the different channels and all the different parts of what makes a team, being mindful of everything in the context that it exists in. That openness to all strategies and perspectives makes me a very strong worker.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to always being open to other perspectives. I think that as I'm talking about why I decided to specialize in affiliate, I'm still very open to all the different channels and all the different parts of what makes a team. That makes me a very strong worker when I have all of that in my scope of work, just being mindful of everything in the context that it exists in. I stay open to everything and all the strategies, and not being closed off just because maybe it hasn't worked in the past. That openness has really been the key to my career growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to always be open to other perspectives. I think that as I'm talking about why I decided to specialize in affiliate, I'm still very open to all the different channels and all the different parts of what makes a team. That makes me a very strong worker when I have all of that in my scope of work, right? Just being mindful of everything in the context that it exists in. Yeah, that's the advice that stuck with me for my career, just being open to everything and all the strategies, and not being closed off because maybe it hasn't worked in the past.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

As a young woman who's trying to get into the career that I'm in now, the biggest thing I would say is advocate for yourself as a woman. Especially in the field of marketing in general, without it just being in the affiliate space, I think that women in general, it's harder for us to kind of just be louder or perceived as taking up too much space. Advocacy, showing up for yourself, making sure that you value your work before you're showing it, and not finding validation in others would be what I would tell a woman that's very young trying to come into a marketing career.
