Her Story
About Dr. Crystal
I've been in education for 20 years, and what originally led me to this field was working with high school kids and younger kids when I was in high school going into college. I loved working with people and helping people become better. Throughout my career, I've worked with every grade level from preschool to 12th grade and beyond, in a variety of settings including online schools, hybrid schools, credit recovery schools, Title I, Department of Defense, public, and charter schools. My teaching career started off in middle and high school, and I also coached soccer, swimming, and track throughout my career. I was a big part of a campus's transition during COVID from being exclusively in person into being online at Ohio Media School, a diploma accredited school for adults offering degrees in specified areas of media like podcasting, video broadcasting, and radio. I then worked with Columbus City Schools for 4 years at Lyndon McKinley High School, and this year I'm with Big Walnut High School as an assistant principal. My role here right now focuses mainly on PBIS and attendance, finding ways we can increase our culture and continue to build on the excellent things we have going on. Big Walnut is a very high-performing school with a lot of kids that go to college and get scholarships for athletics, academics, theater, and music. What I find most rewarding is continuously building relationships, knowing that no two days are alike, and getting that moment where a parent or a kid or a teacher or anybody in the community just says thank you, that what I said changed the trajectory of their life or helped them get through something really hard. That's what I live for - I just want to be there for people and help them overcome.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just be aware of yourself and where your boundaries are, and know that you're constantly reinventing yourself each year. When it comes to not getting burnt out, know that that requires you to be intentional about how you give to others, like give feedback to others, encourage them, and also support them in growing. And then also be open yourself to receiving that, because I do think you just become stagnant, and then the work becomes loses its purpose, and that drive goes away with it. So know who you are, and then also give who you are to others, and receive when others give to you.
